Dell optiplex CPU

If you take a dell optiplex 9020 could you throw in a newer cpu? Like one of the newer Ryzen models for example. I’m looking into getting an optiplex and am curious on what I could put in it with the stock mother board.

I'm fairly certain the Optiplex computers use custom motherboards, so the case would not fit the required ATX motherboard to run a Ryzen. You may be able to upgrade it to a newer intel CPU depending on the chipset and socket.

No, A i7 4770 would be the best CPU that could go in it.

They're designed to work pretty much as it comes and it will be difficult to replace enough of it to enable much newer generations like Ryzen. If you want Ryzen, you're better off ignoring the Optiplex totally and plan a build from scratch.

I have a couple of those units with 4790 in it. It'll probably work with a 4790k too. Both CPUs still sell for more than you think used so it isn't a great upgrade to buy separately.
