Optimal subwoofer placement

Hi guys, I have a 2.1 Altec Lansing speaker system that I use for my desktop. I place the satellits and subwoofers all on my desk because of space constraints (and my floor is carpet). I noticed that the bass is a lot deeper when I am standing up as opposed to sitting in front of my computer. How can I improved the bass without placing the subwoofers on the floor?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

put the woofer where your head will be and play some bass sine waves/music, then move around your room and listen for the place where it sounds the best. This is where you put the woofer.

The cable isn't long enough :(

Why not just send a low-pass frequency directly to your noggin by connecting the +/- to each of your ears?

most people only have one set of jumper leads and they are best left in the car.
