First PC Build!

Go to solution Solved by Derrk,

overall build sounds reasonable. you probably want to add a large capacity hdd along with the ssd, especially with how big modern games can be

only compatibly issue would be the b450. I don't know if this asus board comes with the latest bios already on it, so you may need to flash the bios before it'll work with the 3700x.

these components should fit fine in this case.

stock cpu cooler is okay, but a cheap air cooler will perform better. IMO, the more fans the merrier! but i'm also a bit over-compulsive about thermals

Hey, just wanted some advice on my first PC build! Thanks!

Budget: ~$1200 USD

Country: New Jersey, United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

SolidWorks (including simulations), Physics Simulations and Running Virtual Machines (ROS and Gazebo), various programming/ML stuff, 1440p 60 Hz gaming (may upgrade monitor to higher refresh rate in the future)

Sample games: Civilization 6, Kerbal Space Program (large textures so 8gb VRAM would be nice), Witcher 3

Other details

As a college student, I move every 4 months so a small build would be nice.

Existing parts:

ViewSonic VA2719-2K Monitor (1440p, 60Hz)

Corsair K63 Keyboard

Logitech M510 Mouse (I'll probably upgrade this soonish)

Current Parts To Buy List:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X, higher than in some recommended build videos I found online but I have some more CPU focused tasks apart from gaming

GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2060 Super (Ventus)

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B450-i (mini itx)

Case: NZXT H210

PSU: Corsair RM 650 (80 plus gold, fully modular)

RAM: G Skill Ripjaw 16gb (8x2) DDR4 3200Hz

SSD: Inland Premium 1TB M.2 NVME SSD

Questions

Does the overall build sound reasonable?

Any potential/glaring compatibility issues?

Would fitting all these components in the case be doable?

Is the stock CPU cooler enough? Should I get extra fans for the case?

Maybe more storage is recommended than 1tb

If you want more fps go with an rx 5700xt instead of a 2060s because they are the same price, except the 5700xt doesnt have ray tracing, or instead of that you should wait for nvidias ampere graphics cards because they will be better and have cheaper launch prices, get a few extra fans (if i find a good link i will post it) and the stock cooler should be enough unless you want to overclock, that seems to be it

Looks good. You will need a bios update with that mobo, I imagine it would be hard to find another ITX motherboard due to prices. And I would also go with a rx 5700(xt) if your ok with AMD.

if you live near a microcenter or similar computer store, they're usually happy to flash the bios for you

Thanks, that's good to know!

FYI, AMD GPUs are a no go for ML tasks.

Yeah although its not a huge deal for me, the tensor cores are definitely a nice to have!
