Hi there,

I have recently dusted off my old desktop and am trying with limited funds in these isolated times to update my pc.

I think (?) i have done a reasonable job on an Amazon prebuilt desktop that is from 2014.

So far i have upgraded the Case, The processor and the power supply.

I am looking to upgrade the GPU but am getting increasingly confused with the range and types. I was thinking of upgrading to a 4gb or 6gb card but i can't understand why prices vary so wildly. I can't figure out why some 4gb cards are more expensive than 6gb etc. (based on Ebay prices)

The machine will not be used for FPG's or any Car racing games. I mostly play Sub sims and flight sims which are all about realistic weather and shading etc.

I will be upgrading the Hard drive to an SSD and pushing the memory up to 16gb by the end of this year 2020.

Any help for an old guy is greatly appreciated.

Cheers Ian

The quick and easy method is going to be getting a 1650 that doesn’t need additional pcie power.

But if you want more performance, just swap the power supply(if it’s one of those cheap 350w) and get something along the lines of 2070 super or higher.

I don’t think anything else in your system needs an update today. Maybe more ram, but gpu>ram

edit: I typed 1650 super when I meant to write 1650, the super needs pcie power from the power supply.

I want to make a point that video card gb is a very poor guide on performance, that’s partially why the prices vary on the ebay market.

Also prices vary on ebay because that’s the used market, nothing there is static.

The 6GB cards would be better than the 4GB cards (if they are based on the same GPU), preferably I would recommend at least 8GB of VRAM for your video card since lower could cause the system to struggle running modern games at higher quality, if you would like a specific video card recommendation, please include what your budget is, what country you are shipping from, and what power supply is in your system?

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,
