Hi there! I'm new to this whole upgrading thing, and have pretty limited funds as i'm only 16 and unemployed. I just wanted some opinions on a parts list i have (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Phantom775/saved/8WCnLk)
The CPU is an Intel Core I7 3770, and a Nvidia Geforce GTX 660 for the GPU, since i already own these in my not so desireable Alienware X51. The Case and PSU were purchased this morning, but i'm sure with any changes that are made these are the most 'flexible' parts of them all. Thank you in advance for any input, and have a good day.

Just throw in an 8GB RX 470/480/570/580/590 for ~$100

CPU is fine for gaming

Would have suggested a better PSU though

and just keeping your current case as case prices are crazy right now

The cooler is a really bad value

why is there an AMD motherboard

If you plan to go to 16GBs of RAM get it used

the post isn't very clear

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

would any of these work with the mobo i have selected?

Why would you need to replace your motherboard? Also that motherboard wouldn't work for an intel CPU

I was told by someone the Alienware mobo was unable to be put into normal cases.

I mean maybe not but I don't see any reason to replace a case that isn't broken, that money was better spent on the PSU or GPU, just need my time machine.

Also what power supply is in the current PC? unless it's a low wattage it would have been fine. Does the motherboard even take ATX power supplies? Should post a picture of the PC.

You can probably just make the motherboard fit in the new case anyways. drilling a few holes is easy for the stand offs, or screwing it to some piece of wood or cardboard and attaching that to the case in place of standoffs.

The priority should have been GPU, Power supply if needed, a 1080p 144hz free-sync display

then maybe RAM and an SSD

that's another reason i thought i should get a new mobo. the PSU is a brick. not even in the PC.

well you need to get something with the right socket and chipset

may even have to grab something from aliexpress unless you can find a used intel motherboard that's very cheap.

could have even just used a cardboard box as the case if it meant a better GPU or display or something

I don't understand what this partlist is for? It's just a bunch of random components. What are you planning to do?

Also if the pc is underperforming just upgrade the gpu. A rx 570 or 580 will fit and work perfectly fine in terms of power consumption and be a nice budget upgrade without having to replace anything.

so you're trying to upgrade the case?

i just want to take my CPU and GPU out of my X51, leave the other parts behind, and make a whole new system using the 2 parts i want to transfer over to save money. Case, mobo, PSU, SSD, RAM will be new parts. (atleast that's the end plan)

Ok so you'll have to find a cheap lga 1155 board on ebay that supports the i7 3770 which there are not a lot off without overpaying. Honestly you are far better off selling the whole computer and buying something new as alienwares tend to keep their value more and people like to go for the bling.

At that point you are better of getting a new system as that is basically what you are doing. Why do you want to move from the case? What's the problem?

Honestly probably not a horrible idea, but i have no clue what this PC from years ago would be worth. In that case, i would try to change to Ryzen rather than intel.

yep ryzen all the way, you're better off trying to sell the system in parts or try to get someone to buy it whole which i doubt

The purposes for the new case is

1) The PC frequently overheats even with room temperature being at 60F. there is no dust obstructing the vents.

2) There is little to no room to upgrade anything in the future.

3) as mentioned, there's little to no room and it frequently overheats. everything is crammed into this case with very very minimal room inbetween components.
