looking to upgrade

Go to solution Solved by LienusLateTips,

lga 1150 is ancient now. change the motherboard, there isn't really much you can upgrade to on 1150.

Budget (CAD) around 1000$

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: mostly gaming, overwatch, league, far cry, cod, etc..

Other details:

current pc-

i5-4590 3.3ghz

gtx 960

8gb ddr3 memory

ASUS z97-e motherboard

I am looking to upgrade the cpu, gpu and ram (if i need to), i was looking at getting a gtx 1660 ti because that looks like a reasonable option. But the cpu is where I am stuck. I dont want to deal with the hassle of changing the motherboard, so im stuck with the lga 1150 socket. what is a good option cpu for that socket that pairs well with the gtx 1660?

I'd just upgrade the GPU first, the rest looks fine. Wait until the Ryzen 3 launch or when other prices get back to normal for the rest. Something like a 5600 XT would work great.

On top of the wrong country thing, a couple criticisms.

-The 3600 is the same as the 3600X with a slightly lower clock speed

-the RAM is pretty expensive for what it is

-why a 2060 Super? a 2070 or 5700XT are cheaper and better

-case has horrid airflow

-power supply is extremely questionable in terms of quality, a CX450 would be recommended at minimum....

@LienusLateTips

I would disagree with you here kind sir.

-3600x boosts higher and also comes with a better included cooler for only $25

-Ram is about $10 overpriced for what it is, but let's be real, it looks good... and $10 isn't a steep fee to pay for that

- The case is not horrible and has 3 fans on the front, 2 on the bottom, 1 on the back, and 1 on the top. Fairly standard and really not bad at all.

-And no bud, the 2060 super and 2070 are certainly not the same price. 2060 super is $400 while the $2070 is $500. And 2070 doesn't have very many more cudas to make it worth the price.

-Yeah you have a point on the PSU

For $30 you can get a much better aftermarket cooler which can make the CPU boost higher anyway, the 2070 isn't the 2070 Super and the 5700XT is cheaper.

What? How is the 2070 super cheaper than the 2060 super? Does that make any sense logically? Also, I’ve added images taken directly from Nvidia’s website of both showing clearly the 2070 super is $100 more expensive. Also you’re assuming OP is interested in overclocking his CPU. Many people are not, and for that reason the $25 is worth it to have a higher clock and better cooler.

You're confusing the 2070 with the 2070 Super, we're talking about the 2070 not about the 2070 Super, and at the moment it isn't but until 2 weeks ago it was cheaper than the 2060 Super: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/H7MTwP/msi-geforce-rtx-2070-8-gb-ventus-gp-video-card-rtx-2070-ventus-gp

The 3600 and the 3600X are basically identical at stock(~3% difference) and with PBO they are identical. A aftermarket cooler is going to be better and help with overclocking if wanted, don't really think that a difference that is likely within margin of error to be more important than a better cooler that is going to allow more flexibility and quieter/cooler operation.

https://www.techspot.com/article/1880-ryzen-3600x-vs-3600/

And with Ryzen CPUs if you want to overclock you just need to activate PBO, as manual OC often ends up being worse overall than PBO, so it's not like it's hard to do.

You pulled up pretty much the cheapest 2070 piece of junk. I was comparing founders edition cards for an apples to apples comparison. Sure, if I want to go buy some garbage, I can say the 2060 super costs less too. Also, no, I'm not confusing them, you did saying initially said "a 2070 or 5700XT are cheaper and better" at which point disputed it and said " I’ve added images taken directly from Nvidia’s website of both showing clearly the 2070 super is $100 more expensive.". You then proceeded to say "For $30 you can get a much better aftermarket cooler which can make the CPU boost higher anyway, the 2070 isn't the 2070 Super and the 5700XT is cheaper.". See, I am not getting them confused. You said 2070 super is cheaper. Either way, whether you're referring to the 2070 super or the 2070, neither is cheaper than the 2060 super. image.thumb.png.f3ba34c51a7e633e3ad6b4b177669085.png

Considering how bad the reference is, I doubt that the Ventus is worse(cooling wise), likely it's about the same.

Yes you disputed it by pulling the 2070 Super that never was mentioned, or does "a 2070" = 2070 Super?

I answered this by saying that it wasn't cheaper at the moment. And by "the 2070 isn't the 2070 Super and the 5700XT is cheaper." I meant "The 2070 isn't the same as 2070 Super. And the 5700XT is cheaper than both.", sorry that I built the sentence in a weird way. I never said that the 2070 Super was cheaper, but I did admit my mistake of using outdated prices for the 2070 non-Super at the "and at the moment it isn't but until 2 weeks ago it was cheaper than the 2060 Super" explaining why I thought that it was cheaper.

Yes, I think the wording was just a little misleading. Nbd
