Is it a thing that your motherboard can not support a certain level of etheret. For example your motherboard ethernet port can not support a cat6 cable or not support a certain speed like 2gb

If everything physically fits (A.K.A. if you're using a cable with an RJ45 end), you're limited to the slowest speed in the link.

So if you're using a 10Gb/s router, Cat6 cable (which can do 10Gb/s at until certain distances) and computer/motherboard with a 1Gb/s connection, your connection will be limited to 1Gb/s. Simply because the slowest link caps at 1Gb/s.

But even though a Cat6 (or Cat6A, Cat7, etc.) cable can do higher speeds, it will still work with slower ports (and vice versa; 'slow cable' on a fast connection will still move at the lowest speed).
