So I am planning to build a pc. And so I will be going with a ryzen 5 3600 but I am wondering should I spend that extra £40 on a x570 motherboard or should I just buy the cheaper b450m motherboard?

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

GPU: Gigabyte gtx 1660 Super oc 6g
Mobo:MSI b450 tomahawk max

RAM: 32gb ddr4 lpx vengeance 3200mhz

Storage: WD sn550 1tb, Baracuda 2TB HDD (*In use), Hitachi 2tb HDD, WD 0.5tb HDD (both HDD knackered)

PSU: cxm 450

Case: Corsair Carbide Series

If you will benefit from the PCIe Gen 4, then go for the x570.

In either case, just wait for the B550's coming out soon. They'll feature everything on an x570, at a lower price.

So the PCI Gen 4 could be used for?

Storage right now appears to be the main reason, I get 5gb reads and writes from a Gen 4 NVMe drive. (compare that to the 500mb read/writes I get on a crappy SSD - I am sure you can get better).

Whether you need that or not, I don't know.

I think the bigger thing is, what might have Gen 4 tomorrow, or next week etc.  Is it going to be something you regret not having, are you in a position to simply buy a new motherboard if you need Gen 4.

Fast NVMe storage but for most users I don't think it will be beneficial. Some video cards also use gen 4 but they hardly even fully utilize 8x PCIe gen 3 apart from maybe the Nvidia XX80 Ti.

So i plan on running an nvme drive on my motherboard so Im guessing I can get faster speed out of that

Only if it is a Gen 4 NVMe drive, mine is and it is 10 times faster than my SSD - which is a crappy one.

Whether you will utilise the huge read/write speeds is another matter.  Testing I saw seemed to show that boot speeds were barely affected, and generally speaking the Gen 3 NVMe (at the top end) were pretty similiar anyway.

If you do decide to go Gen 4, the Sabrent Rocket 4.0 has good reviews.

I put it in these terms, when I got this PC, I have no intention of updating it for years to come.

This Motherboard will be with me for 5+ years, so why not get the Gen 4 now, who knows what will use the speeds in 3 years.

If you are a builder who is upgrading every 12-18-24 months, then perhaps not that important, as by the time anything comes along that really utilises Gen 4, you will be about to build a new system anyway.

It is really down to you.
