Hi,
I'm new to this forum.
I am a mathematician by profession.
I've ordered a new notebook from Hidevolution which is due to be delivered in about 2 weeks.
Here are the essentials:
* EVOC High Performance Systems NH583 (NH58AC) - 15.6" FHD 120Hz
* AMD® Ryzen™ 9 3900 12 Core - 24 Thread Processor, 3.1 GHz (Max Boost Clock 4.3 GHz), 64 MB Smart Cache
* NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti w/ 6GB GDDR6
* Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces
* Sabrent 4TB Rocket PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD - Up to 3,450 MB/s Read - 3,000 MB/s Write
* HIDevolution Approved Standard 32GB Dual Channel DDR4/3200MHz (2 x 16GB)
* Genuine Windows® 10 Pro, 64bit, English
This specification reflects the usage intended for the machine: Mathematical & engineering processing.
I am not a game fan, so I don't need better video adapters.
I am very impressed by the technical know-how of many of the members in this forum and very eager to hear your advice as to how to tweak the operating system or any other remarks you have as to increase the efficiency of this configuration.

Which forum do you suggest to post this?

Thank you

That’s a weird combo between cpu and GPU. I hope the notebook has adequate cooling for the 12c/24t

@nidany

I've moved your thread to Laptops and Pre-Build Systems. This could have fit to Programs, Apps and Websites as well, but since its more laptop-centric, this subforum is better. In future, you can post to subforum you think topic will fit. If you have doubts, you can report the thread using Report function (triangle with exclamation mark). Use it for locking and removing threads/posts too. I edited your title to represent content better.

To actual question. Tweaking OS with modern hardware is rarely ever needed. Only thing I would do is to check how battery saving and performance settings are, and that only if there's some issue. There really isn't anything else needed.

Whether laptop is good or not depends on what you are using it for. How much visual rendering you need? Need for dedicated GPU is only about graphical rendering capabilities. If you are using MathLab/Octave etc. only and not doing visualizations that much, you could do with iGPU only. Though with this machine price and service length will be more interesting.

Thank you for your insight and advice.
I'm also using Matlab as you've correctly guessed.
The choice of the GPU wasn't mine. That was the cheapest one Hidevolution offered with this system.

PS: For some unknown reason, I wasn't notified by mail that I got any replies to my post. Could you check why?

Thanks again

Well, the only thing that I could think of about this system is the fact that no one should ever use the Conductonaut unless it is used in extremely OCed systems. The liquid metal will "run away" in a laptop and might leave you with all sorts of defects. I would recommend the Kryonaut or the Noctua NT-H1/H2. But this TIM does more harm than good. Yes, it might make (drastical) temporary differences in temperature, but I would not risk such a pricy system. with a probably well-developed cooling system.

Thank you for your remark.
I'll convey it to Hidevolution and hear their opinion.

I really share your hope for obvious reasons 🙂
I tend to rely on Hidevolution's good reputation and hope for the best...

They will probably sell it to you anyway if that is their default option. Or do you have any option to modify that?

These are the options they offer:

Stock TIM - Stock thermal compound and thermal pads

Gelid GC Extreme on CPU + GPU and Stock thermal pads – installed by HIDevolution +$30.00

Gelid GC Extreme on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces – installed by HIDevolution +$65.00

Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Stock thermal pads – installed by HIDevolution +$65.00

Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces – BEST PERFORMANCE – installed by HIDevolution +$95.00

I chose the last one because I guessed it will improve cooling

Oh, okay. So the Gelid GC Extreme seems to be the only regular thermal paste that they have to offer.

Do you have the option for extended warranty? If so, go for that when you go for the last option that you initially chose. After all, they seem to guarantee that it's working when they put it out as an option. If it causes damages they are to blame.

Right you are.

Will do.

Seems OK there. Any suggestions?

You can post issues to https://linustechtips.com/main/forum/82-forum-bugs-and-issues/ and admin will take a closer look.

But you only get one notification per action in thread. So you only get either quote/mention or posting notif.
