I have a little bit of a dilemma. my brothers pc needs a upgrade sometime soon, he is still rocking a i5-3570k. he is very frugal and doesn't like spending a lot of money, this new ryzen 3300x looks very promising in performance. my question is, how long will it last? my brother is fine not running everything on ultra and he probably would like to use something for the next 4 years or so ( that i5 is like 6-7 years old now. people say for years 4 cores will end up not being enough in the future, would like some opinions on this matter, Hes got a gtx 1070 to pair it with but were just focused on upgrading his cpu. Hes willing to wait if need be.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

The 3300x is a pretty ballin lil CPU for the price, but for not much you can get the 3600 and with the extra 4 threads I think thats a better "value". On a budget, the 3300x is phenomenal, but if you already have a 1070 to go with it, I think your slightly above that "super budget build" area.... The 1070 is an extremely capable card.

Personally, it makes more sense in the scheme of getting a new mobo, new RAM, and a new CPU to spend ~50-70 bucks more and get a 3600.

Also this.... But the way its going, even my old 8700k @ 5GHz sat at 100% CPU utilization the entire time in battlefield V. I attribute that MUCH more to crap coding and im sure FPS would be almost the same on a lower thread count chip, I don't think my 9900k now that it runs at ~80% really changed anything, but, its clear games are becoming much more CPU threaded. The upgrade cost to a 3600 just makes too much sense in OP's case.

Im also kind of on the fence on just waiting for the ryzen 4000 series. Would be a shame if a counter part to the 3600 comes out and its like 1.5x better for the same price lol

The next consoles will have 8 cores Zen 2 based CPUs, so there's good chances that 8 cores will become the new sweet spot.

current consoles have 8 cores. I think if that were true it would have became more apparent over the last few years. Of course them being zen 2 we might see more utilization to pc ports because the hardware is going be very similar.

True, but I doubt it will be totally game changing. But yes, if you can wait, its not a bad time to wait a little bit :)

Yep now they're using the weak Jaguar architecture. Since the AAA games will be optimized for Zen 2, I'm pretty sure we'll see the impact on PC has well.
