So I don't have the option of using ethernet direct to the router. I'm thinking of using a powerline adapter to hook up to ethernet using our electrical wiring, but I don't know if I should just choose a wireless card instead. Which medium provides a more reliable, stable connection??

Ethernet is always going to be more stable, but of your Wifi is decent enough it should do.

I have no first hand experience with powerline adapters but several people I know have tried it and were far from pleased.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled. So where the heck am I?

Powerline can be an incredible waste of time with shotty electrical wiring and can often increase latency.

Get a decent wireless card, or switch to a mesh solution like Google WiFi and plug your computer into one of the access points via ethernet.
