Can i use NVME drive?

Dan790

Hey,

I'm about to buy new MB, and i looked on the manufacturer review and did not understand if its compatible with NVME drive

the MB is : ASUS ROG Strix B450-I Gaming

they wrote:

"M.2 Audio Combo Card

‧ 1 x 2242-2280, supports SATA & PCIe 3.0 x4 modes
(at card)
‧ 1 x 2242-2280, supports PCIe 3.0 x4 mode
(at rare)"

does that mean that i can put into the M.2(not the regular pci-e) slot NVME drive like 'Pioneer SSD 256GB M.2 NVME - SE20'?

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-B450-I-GAMING/ (link to the review)

Thanks in advanced.

The board supports M.2 drives of the SATA and PCIE variety, depending on what CPU you use:

Quote

AMD Ryzen™ 2nd Generation/ Ryzen™ 1st Generation Processors :
1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)
1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)*1
AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics Processor :
1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (SATA & PCIE 3.0 x 4 mode)
AMD Athlon™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics Processors :
1 x M.2 Socket 3, with M key, type 2242/2260/2280 storage devices support (SATA mode)

So if you use a Ryzen 1st/2nd/3rd gen (without graphics, so not including the 2400G, 3400G, etc.) you can use both slots. The top slots support either type of M.2 (doesn't matter if it's M.2 SATA or PCIE/NVME) and the other slots only supports PCIE/NVME type SSD's.

The other type of CPU's have a different support list.

So yes, that SSD is an M.2 NVME/PCIE, so it will work with the board (if you're not using an Athlon, that is).

That means the second M.2 slot won't be available to use, but that has no influence on the top slot and the SSD in that.
