Consumer version. If you want it now wait for DK2 to at least be announced before you decide. Don't get DK1.

What will it improve over dk1 and how close will it be to the consumer version

Dev kit 2?

Yep. DK1 is very noticeably a dev kit. You can see HUGE pixels, it just wont be that enjoyable until it's 1080P (preferably 1440P+) and more comfortable. Hopefully DK2 is better. but waiting for the consumer version is always better.

We don't know exact specs but it's rumored "better than crystal cove."

Umm like everything is improved.  DK1 is not worth it and to be honest theres not many left in stock news reports state so just leave them to actual Devs that really need them

When will the consumer version be released?

I don't think anyone knows. I would guess by the end of the year or beginning of 2015. I'll really think about getting DK2 because of having to wait so long.

So would it be worth the wait to get the consumer or just jump on the dk2

The consumer version will not be 4K for sure the Rift requires as high a framerate as possible.   The Steam Dev Days outlined alot of requirements for VR success and high framerate 4K will just kill consumer cost.

soo, 1440p? Would a gtx 780 push that fine? Also, is it 2 1440p screens or just one. I don't understand the screens behind the box

Can't speculate on something that doesn't have any final specs but 2 screens output the same image from your machine its only cloneing the output.  The Optics just rearange the visuals for your eyes interpretation

Oooh, ok. I though the card would have to render 2 1440p screens at the same time.

With the distance from your face, a 1440p or 4k screen would be pointless. Go watch Slick's review of the one they had at whatever-that-thing-was where it was 1080p... He said it was awesome. I don't see there being anything more than that.

He also reviewed a pair of Sony Movie thingies that were similar, they were 720p, and looked just as awesome (says Slick/Luke)

So they'll either make it 1080p, or upgrade the way you see it so they can use 720p and make it look 1080p quality.
