I decided to build myself a NAS from an old computer I'll be receiving (Thread with initial questions here).
I went through a bunch of videos regarding ups and downs with custom builds and I came across this one, which explains how a dedicated NAS is better in the long run.

Now, I do plan to get a dedicated NAS later down the line, but it's not gonna be right in the near future.
So I still have some questions regarding the custom one.

First question would be about the case. In that video it's explained how the original case would favor heat degradation.
Are there cases I should look for to avoid this? Smaller cases would do for me, cause space in my house can become a problem...
Or should I be worried about degradation at all, since the NAS will only be used as video storage?
I reckon it's gonna handle transfers only when I'm accessing it from the TV or PC.

My second question is about transferring the hard drives to a dedicated NAS:
Should I be worried about Synology or similar devices not reading the hard drives properly (since they are used on different operating systems)?
I don't really know how these arrays work, to be honest.

The PC specs are:
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G3250 @ 3.20GHz
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 (kinda short, but I plan to extend to 8 or 12)

I wouldn't really agress there, a old desktop will work fine for a home nas.

For most all home nases there is no where neara enough heat to cause any issues. Just get a case fan or two and your fine.

What temps are you hitting?

Moving drives to a different nas normally means wiping them.

Do you have a backup plan?

No backup plan, cause I'm new to this :(
Unless there are alternatives, I guess I'll have to get some storage along with the new NAS so I can transfer all my data before wiping the initial drive.
I'll try to save for the new one before the first drive gets completely filled up.

As for the temps, my cousin isn't a tech head. She can't tell me what temps the computer is hitting.
Also the hard drive is very old and became very slow. It's probably bottle necking the hell out of those specs.

whats your current drive?

make sure you have a backup plan, a whole nas can fail and wipe all the data on it

I have no drive at the moment. I plan to get a new one after I get the computer.
As for backups, I really don't know what exactly to do. Buying 2 drives is too much of a budget stretch for me, given the purpose of this whole thing.

How much data do you need to store?

Sotring data isn't cheap if you want to do it well, so you kinda have to budget for 2-3x or more the amount of the drives compared to what you want to store.

As stated in the other thread, regardless of the initial target, the need for storage will keep increasing, because the movies will keep piling up.
So for now, I'll just stick to one single drive, and refrain from storing too many movies, and wait until I can spend on a full dedicated NAS and all the needed storage for back-ups.

If its just a single nas, Id probably just make a share in your desktop, no reason to have a second pc for a single drive nas.

Noted.
I think I'll still rely on the old PC for sharing and have it in the same room as the TV. My main rig and the TV will be in separate rooms.
Thanks again for your advice.
