So a friend is offering me his PSU for the same price as the one I was going to get.

Here is the one I was going to get: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seasonic-power-supply-ssr550rm

Here is the one he is offering me: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817152044&clickid=QGiUWX20a10eVzwS3uV8uRBjUkTUbDSS3RH2U80&iradid=97618&ircid=2106&irpid=79301&nm_mc=AFC-IR&cm_mmc=AFC-IR-_-na-_-na-_-na

He says he'll give it to me for the same price as the Seasonic 550w I was going to get.

My build includes an Asus Z87-Pro with a 4670K and a EVGA 780 SC ACX.

Should I take his offer?

Why not?
It's overkill, so you won't run at peak performance, but if he's used it, it's tested.

You know the non-name brand-ness won't kill you.

So why wouldn't you?

Well, if it randomly fails on me, I don't have any protection or return plan.

True. However, if the Seasonic surges, or frys anything (It happened to me), they won't cover that either...

In the end, it's really up to you.

Also, why is your friend selling it? Maybe he knows theres an issue...

With your specs, I wouldn't overclock your GPU or CPU too hard on that 550 though. Personally, I would get a 650, and call it a day.

he says he has no use for it and says he has had not problems thus far.

I was planning to OC pretty hard haha. What PSU do you recommend I get?

650W is the minimum I'd realy go for tbh :P

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Intel i7 5820l @ with Corsair H110 | 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 1600Mhz | XFX Radeon R9 290 @ 1.2Ghz | Corsair 600Q | Corsair TX650 | Probably too much corsair but meh should have had a Corsair SSD and RAM | 1.3TB HDD Space | Sennheiser HD598 | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro | Blue Snowball

I like the Corsair ones personally...

My recommendations would be to go Modular (Semi is fine, and normally cheaper), get a 750, and go with a name brand. Also, read reviews... Power supplies can cause issues if buggy.

Yes, and that's perfectly fine :D

Might go with the HX then. It's the same price pretty much.

550W is sufficient for the system you described but if you want a little extra something like SeaSonic SS-660XP2 or SeaSonic SS-760XP2 would be suitable.

the 760 is pretty expensive..so is the 660

Link doesn't seem to work.

here's the newegg link for it. no idea why pcpartpicker isn't working. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139010&clickid=wkvTKXWtt3tyTnfUneUTUTs3UkTUbMwxw2G7Q80&iradid=97618&ircid=2106&irpid=79301&nm_mc=AFC-IR&cm_mmc=AFC-IR-_-na-_-na-_-na

The HX is reasonably good.

You might also consider SeaSonic SSR-750RM which is the 750W version of the 550W you originally choose.

How does it stack up against the HX750?

Generally the HX series is decent quality. The only recent review I could find was http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?act=url&depth=1&hl=en&ie=UTF8&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://www.sweclockers.com/recension/16554-fem-nataggregat-med-80-plus-gold/9&usg=ALkJrhjtRxQQMt9lz3m8ZKuIB46U4P9a5w#pagehead. But there is a five year old review I just came across that if the unit is still made as described, makes the HX750 a good candidate, http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Corsair-HX750W-Power-Supply-Review/775/10. The noise level at load might be a concern.

A Seasonic G-750 review can be found at http://hardocp.com/article/2013/10/30/seasonic_gseries_g750_power_supply_review/9#.UwbfgoVDLdU.

Oh yeah, the HX does produce way too much noise. I like the G-750 but I also saw this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cp9020055ww

I'm not a fan of the RM series in general. http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/11/13/corsair_rm750_750w_power_supply_review/9#.UwbqiIVDLdU

The AX is very good. At the other end of the spectrum the CX modulars are decent for the price.

XFX P1-750B-BEFX is a rebranded Seasonic unit. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/XFX-PRO-750-W-Black-Edition-Full-Modular-Power-Supply-Review/1695/13.
