What GPU?

DAMO85

Hello folks

I am currently looking purchase a new GPU for my system. I dont play big games like; Destiny, Tomb Raider, Forza etc. I prefer play strategy games like; Command and Conquer, The Sims, Planet Zoo, Jurassic World Evolution etc.

I have been looking up GPU's for those game types and also in conjunction with my 1440p 60Hz Dell Ultrasharp U2515h, but to be honest, it starts to melt my head after hours of research lol.

I ended up at the Palit Geforce GTX 1080 8gb GameRock and Jetstream, but want to make sure that I am not spending tons of £'s more on a GPU, that I wont fully utilise.

My current build of 3years now is as follows:

CPU: I7 6700k @4.2GHz

AIO: Corsair Hydro Series H115i

MOBO: Asus Maximus IX Formula

RAM: Trident Z RGB 3200mhz CL14 16gb

STORAGE: Samsung Pro 960 512gb NVMe

PSU: Seasonic 650w 80+ Gold

Current GPU: XFX HD7950 DD 3gb

I really appreciate the help with this matter.

Thankyou

I was looking to find the GPU's new, but could only find them used. Currently the Jet Stream is going for £220

The 1080 seems like a good deal as it's the same price as a new 1660 super, which is slower card.

Yes, because 10 series is no longer in production. Brand new 10 series graphics cards are awfully expensive. That used 1080 is a good deal though. Would recommend reapplying thermal paste after buying the card.

If you want a new card, look at the 20 series cards instead, or AMD's radeon cards. Would recommend the RX 5700XT if you're looking for a new card

I'd go for a 5700 non-XT for his specific use scenario. The games he's using are not that graphically intensive, and some (like the newer Command & Conquer) even have engine limits for the framerate. Even at 1440p, as long as he's got one of the cards with 8GB of VRAM, he should be good. Even an RX 580 (about double the performance of what he has now) would work fine, though not for higher than 60 FPS if the settings are maxed.

I have my eye on a used RX5700 xt, but the card is 12inch long and would be about 1/2 inch (12.5mm) from the radiator fans. I was originally looking at the RX580 8gb card, but on Jurassic World evolution, the fps was around 40-50 fps on a 1440p monitor on max settings. I looked at the GTX 1070 and 1070 ti, but for the price, I decided to look at the 1080 cards.

I am now looking at the: Gigabyte 1080 G1 Gaming 8gb, MSI 1080 Aero 8gb, GTX 1080 fe 8gb, and those two Palit GPU's I mentioned earlier.

Sounds like the 10 series GPU is my way to go. Thankyou for all the help with this matter. I really appreciate the kindness.

There is a tier list on this site, for GPU coolers. According to that,

G1 Gaming: Tier C

Aero: Tier E

FE: Tier E

Gamerock: Tier D

Jetstream: Tier C

Aero and FE are terrible. Both are blower coolers, so they get quite hot. I had a 1070 Aero and it ran at ~90C under full load for a few minutes. Re-applied thermal paste with high quality ones(Kryonaut) and it dropped to ~80. It took a shift to my new case with 9 fans to drop it below 80, around 75C.

All of the above temps were taken with 100% fan speed.

By contrast, I've had a Palit 1070 Ti Jetstream installed for a friend(it was on a huge discount). It ran at 70-75C at about 60% fan speed in a NZXT H500(which is not a case that has great airflow)

I see in the Tier S of the GPU's, the XFX RX5700 xt Thicc iii. Amazon UK are selling the card new for £370. I heard that XFX had cooling problems before, but according to some reviews, this card has very good cooling.

That's correct. The 5700 XT also has the same performance as the GTX 1080, but much newer. Unless you're doing something exclusively CUDA related (like certain professional programs that refuse to use OpenCL instead of CUDA, despite it working on both instead of just one) there really isn't any reason to get a GTX 1080 or lower. Even the NVENC that people rave about, isn't any better than AMD's VCN 2.0. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Core_Next
