Hi

So I have to get a new router just because the WiFi signal is poor in my house. So I was looking and I saw routers ranging from R400($30) to R1500($100) and most of them talk about speeds like 833mbs and speeds way higher than 100mbs. I have a 20mbs DSL line. I don't have fibre in my area as yet so this is best I can get in South Africa at the moment.

I want to know if there's any reason to go for any router higher than the $30 router. Yes I understand that the more expensive routers may have better signal but I would guess the $30 provides enough signal coverage and they both have similar protection. I'm resistant to get a pricey router given that my low DSL speed won't be able to utilise any features that are found on expensive routers.

Thanks

Setting up other WiFi antenna around the building can help, you can use powerline adapters or repeaters to achieve this, or the newfangled “mesh WiFi”.

It is easy enough to set up, I did for my in-laws house using repeaters and extenders, its not perfect and there are still dead spots but all the important areas have good WiFi.

I think i could fix the deadspots with mesh WiFi but they are in places like the utility room or in passageways between rooms so its not worth the cost.
