upgrading CPU.. HELP

Go to solution Solved by Mister Woof,

You made a bad buying choice.

You have a few options:

1. 7700k is still pretty competent. It's faster than the new Ryzen chips at some games still, and not too far behind in others. Especially when overclocked. Keep it, use it, swallow pride. Reassess in a few years. The gtx 1080 is still mostly competent at 1440p. Keep it and just use it.

2. Try to sell the 7700k and 1080, and buy something more well-rounded, like a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 5700xt. But you will still lose money.

3. 1 is the best option since you won't have to spend more money.

My “current” build is one I built a few years back. I’m running a i5-6500 and a gtx1060 6gb, with a z170a gaming motherboard from msi. 16gb ram. I play shooters (modern warfare, cs:go, valorant, apex, etc.)

now here is where I get confused..

I just bought a used 8gb gtx 1080 founders edition for $310. After installing it I found out with the current cpu I have there is quite a bottleneck. I searched up what cpu I should get to match my 1080 with and I ended up buying a i7-7700k... for $500.
After doing further research I feel like I should just upgrade my whole computer. The stuff I’m buying is overpriced and old. Any tips? Should I just build a new pc or stick with my 1080 and 7700k? I know my motherboard is a little older now too. the cpu I purchased came out in 2017 and feel like for the amount of money I spent I could have gotten something way better. I might return it. Any input would be appreciated, thanks

When did you buy the 7700k for 500 usd? Because, that's pretty expensive for a 7700k.
As for upgrading, I'd say that you should stick to what you have now since AMD, Intel, and Nvidia, seems to have plans to release new product this year.

Main Rig :

Ryzen 7 2700X | Powercolor Red Devil RX 580 8 GB | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 | 16 GB TeamGroup Elite 2400MHz | Samsung 750 EVO 240 GB | HGST 7200 RPM 1 TB | Seasonic M12II EVO | CoolerMaster Q300L | Dell U2518D | Dell P2217H |

Laptop :

Thinkpad X230 | i5 3320M | 8 GB DDR3 | V-Gen 128 GB SSD |

I mean for the price of that i7 you could have gotten an i9-900k so maybe a bit overpriced. A GTX 1080 for 310 is not bad at all.

I bought it on eBay. And it actually was the best deal I could find on a brand new one. I could have gotten a refurbished for around $350 but I wanted it new, all other listings were around $550

again for 550 you could have gotten an i9-900k, return the i7 and buy an i9 or a ryzen 7

I’ve been looking at AMD and the Ryzen 7 3700x is better than the i7 7700k it seems, along with being a lot newer and around $150 cheaper. Plus, I could literally buy a brand new 2060 6gb for around the same price I bought a used 2 year old 1080 for though it’s 2gb less but performs relatively the same. So idk
