Hello,

My current setup is:

i7 3770K @ 4.6 Ghz

Asus Sabertooth Z77 MB

2x4 gb ram

600w PSU

Corsair 600T case

XSPC watercooling

GPU: Previously EVGA GTX 1060 3gb, JUST upgraded to ASUS RTX Dual RTX2070S-O8G-EVO

Problem: Computer is crashing midgame while playing Warzone. The whole system will immediately shutoff, no error codes or BSOD, just shut off (as if someone turned off the power), and then the computer restarts. The system was completely stable prior to the the new GPU

What I have tried so far:

1) Updated the nvidia drivers when I installed the new GPU - no success

2) Tried using DDU to uninstall previous drivers (Yes, I was in Safe Mode) - no success

3) Added more case fans - no success

4) I thought perhaps the backplate is heating up the motherboard and causing a thermal trip. The current GPU covers the chipset on the motherboard, so, I tried moving the GPU to the next PCI-E slot. - No success

5) Tried removing all case panels - a bit better? still crashed

6) Tried running the GPU fans at an insane speed (like 80% all the time) - a bit better, still crashed. Less crashes

7) Tried running OCCT to test the memory. NOW THIS IS INTERESTING! The card is listed with the following specs:

OC Mode - GPU Boost Clock : 1845 MHz , GPU Base Clock : 1635 MHz
Gaming Mode (Default) - GPU Boost Clock : 1815 MHz , GPU Base Clock : 1605 MHz

OCCT is showing the following:

Name/Value/Min/Max

Graphics/1950 Mhz/300 Mhz/1965 Mhz

Memory/6801 Mhz/405 Mhz/7001 Mhz

Video/ 1800 Mhz/ 540 Mhz/ 1815 Mhz

Why is the Graphics value at 1950 Mhz?? That seems well above what it should be?

Note: I previously had installed MSI Afterburner for the EVGA card (the EVGA tool was not running properly). I used the MSI tool to overclock the EVGA card, BUT it was uninstalled for the new card.

Any ideas why the system is crashing and why the graphics is at 1950 Mhz?

Thank you in advance.

What's the model of PSU? If the computer just shuts off when playing games it could mean your PSU isn't reliable enough for the card and is going out, if it's as old as the rest of the system I'd say there is a fair chance of it. Very rarely do you see a computer full on shutting off out of nowhere because of drivers or the GPU, usually it will mean the CPU is overheating or the PSU is having an issue. You should also run Hardware Monitor (HWMonitor by CPUID) and test for any overheating with the CPU.

Ok, that is what I thought as well. It is an OCZ, Model: OCZ600MXSP.

I am looking to purchase a Seasonic Prime TX-850 for my new build, but I can't seem to find one in Canada anywhere.

Should I try backing off the overclock?

It is interesting that the system was completely stable previously, but perhaps the extra heat has prevented the current cooling system from keeping the CPU cool.

I'd check the tier list and just go for one of the quality units on there that is available in your area, maybe a Corsair or another Seasonic model.

You could try that but the best/easiest way to know would be to install a temperature monitoring software like HWMonitor and just monitor the temps, launch warzone and see where the temps are at while playing if it it's above 85c it's obviously not cooling the CPU properly. You shouldn't see temps above 70c with that processor while gaming however with an OC and with modern games probably maxing the crap out of it, it doesn't really have a fair chance. It's an old processor and its definitely bottlenecking the 2070 Super. So overheating is definitely plausible.

Well, I think that was the issue. I ran some tests and the CPU alone at 4.6Ghz was fine (peaking at 80 C). However, when running some tests that had fully loaded the GPU AND CPU, the temps really quickly were heading towards 100. I backed off to 4.2 Ghz and opened HWMonitor before playing a game. After a few hours of gaming, the CPU temps maxed at 70. No crashes.

Very interesting how much the GPU heat affected the CPU temps.

If you have an air cooler on your CPU and the cooling on your chassis isn't enough then that will happen. Most GPUs are designed to cool outwards into the case and have that warm air exhausted by your outtake fans. Depending on your case and fan setup you may have a thermal issue with them.
