CPU not cooling

Go to solution Solved by VirtusGraphics,

I solved it, but still some stuff that is kind of weird:

  • I tried different fans connected to AIO and those fans spun up right away, even though the other type fans were not broken.
  • Even if temp rose to 88 degrees, it would not start the fans, but again, it started the other fans?

I found the issue when I started taking the new AIO out to test old. I noticed little to no contact between the plate and CPU, even though they appeared to be when tightening.

Switched out the distancers to the correct ones, pressed pump in to the CPU and checked if paste smeared out nicely. It did, so I fastened it again. Now it seems normal, and CPU stays at 40 degrees idle, but without front fan spnning.

My guess would be that it doesn't care to spin up this particular brand of fans until the pump itself notices it gets hotter? I don't get that but okay. Seems to work now.

Still pretty sure the old AIO's pump was broken (fans and LED working fine), as there had been no hardware or tuning changes the past 2 years—and also Corsair and my vendor themselves assumed defect AIO.

PC has been working fine for two years now. Power went out a week ago. When I tried starting the PC about 3 hours later back then, I started having issues with CPU cooling. First time I got as far as in to Windows and loading my desktop before it shut down. Never gotten that far again.

I get the "CPU over temperature" error on bootup, and according to EUFI, it is steadily going up. After seveal attempts it just automatically shuts down, likely due to reaching above some 90 degrees. My AIO (H115i) showed a solid red light too.
I could not figure out why, so I assume the AIO is borked. Contacted both Corsair and my vendor and told them this. They seemed to think AIO was broken, and my vendor just shipped me a new one (H115i Pro).

It arrived today and I installed it, however I still get the same error.
Note that my OS lives on an M.2 connected directly to MB—so can't use it as a base for SATA not being the issue. Only thing I have connected via SATA is the AIO, a HDD, and an SSD.

Things I have tried:

  • switching to brand new AIO, as mentioned.
  • unplugging the AIO's CPU_FAN header from MB and instead connecting a regular fan directly instead. Works, and seemed to try spinning faster as temp. got higher.
  • ensured the fans connected to AIO works.
  • connected the CPU fan controller of AIO to W_PUMP.
  • tried new SATA cable to supply power to the pump.
  • tried each of the PSU's three SATA ports + FPERIF port, with the new cable.

The fans connected to the AIO does not spin, although the fans themselves are confirmed to not be broken.

Is it possible the PSU's SATA port have been completely broken? I don't get it, because my pump does light up. The USB thing is not connected, so it is the only possible source of power?? The rest seems to work just fine.

Haven't gotten around to test a completely different PSU just yet. It will take a lot of work, as it involves a lot of re-plugging on two computers, so waiting first to see if anyone here have any ideas.

Hardware:

MB: Asus Deluxe-II X99

PSU: EVGA 850 Gold

DIMM: Corsair Vengeance 4x8 GB
CPU: i7-6850K
GPUs: 1080 Ti F.ed + EVGA 1050 Ti

I do not have any overclock on.

@VirtusGraphics if the fans on the AIO does not spin, then there is nothing extracting the heat out of the liquid...

What PSU do you have?

There is a possibility that the PSU itself got damaged during the power outage -- PSU and/or motherboard is usually common parts to go during those scenarios.

Spoiler

A power outage killed the motherboard of my system yeeeears back.

My work office had a power outage over the weekend, and that killed the motherboard + PSU on a co-worker's computer.

Do you have another PSU you can test with, or can you get hold of another one .... even if just temporary?

EVGA 850 Gold. Updated with the hardware details.
It's weird how it still manages to power the LED etc. of the pump, and all the other fans through a fan card (using some other power cable than SATA).

I do have two, but want to avoid dismantling those computers if possible. My time is pretty much up for today, so going to let this post sit until tomorrow and try any new suggestions then, with fallback to trying a different PSU.
