In the base game, everyone will be starting out with an Aurora. You have to remember that the game was designed so that within the space of a few weeks, you could upgrade to something like a Hornet or an Avenger from the Aurora. Also, a well upgraded Aurora could take down something like a 300i. You also have to factor in the pilot's capabilities. It's not as clean cut as saying "The 300i is better than the Aurora" There are so many upgrade opportunities available.

Personally, I had $100 available to back the game, and I chose the Avenger, as wanting to be a Mercenary/Bounty Hunter (pretty much the same thing), a long range fighter with a good sized cargo hold would suite me well. I put the other $25 into credits for initially upgrading my ship.

CPU: 5930K @ 4.5GHz | GPU: Zotac GTX 980Ti AMP! Extreme edition @ 1503MHz/7400MHz | RAM: 16GB Corsair Dom Plat @ 2667MHz CAS 13 | Motherboard: Asus X99 Sabertooth | Boot Drive: 400GB Intel 750 Series NVMe SSD | PSU: Corsair HX1000i | Monitor: Dell U2713HM 1440p monitor

At the moment the ONLY reason to buy a game package, is to get into the Alpha and Beta and to support the game. Also the Aurora package is cheap. Once the game comes out, you'll use in-game credits to buy new ships, there won't be an option to just straight up buy a ship.
