the size of the IHS is so small, "application style" really doesn't come into play because you can cover the whole CPU with very little paste. Pea sized method has yet to fail me with high core count Ryzen CPUs.

I find the pea method to be insufficient. Maybe we have smaller peas here? I don't know.

 

X works fine for me, if there is too much it will simply be forced out through the sides by the pressure of the HSF being screwed on. Just look at the sides as you screw and carefully wipe if needed.
