Hi,

So,  i've made my computer die somehow but accidentally hitting it with my leg. Thing is i have cut my RAM stick pcb a bit (so that my massive case fan would fit) and it was enough for a slight knock on the case for it to become loose out of it's slot.

Edit1: Also to note that my graphics card's power light DOES turn on AND my power supply is not faulty

Question is, can my RAM stick or my motherboard DIE from this?

Hardware:

Gigabyte h110m

8gb crucial

Yes, you could have caused a short on the motherboard. Do you have another stick of ram to test with?

Thanks for the reply,

And no i don't, my current setup uses ddr3 and so does all my systems in my house...

Another thing to note is that my gpu power light does turn on though...

And my powersupply is not the issue because i have replaced it after the problem and still doesnt work...

So I am guessing the system won't turn on with Ram back in place, right? If you leave it out, the motherboard should either show an error if it's a newer model or just beep. If it does nothing, I would assume it's dead. If you get an error though, you may only have to replace the stick of ram.

Yea, it doesn't turn on without the RAM in it, I've tried.

Well the thing is my motherboard does not have a post code to display on the motherboard itself to show any errors like that...

So, chances are the motherboard might still be okay. So i'll consider buying a cheap RAM stick for testing for the time being.

If there was a way to confirm either the motherboard or RAM works without buying replacement parts to test then that would be huge.

Although I'm guessing there isn't a way sadly :/

If you have another computer with the same ram you could just remove a stick there. But please just try it out without cutting something off this time. You only need to see if works, you don't need that fan for the system to boot up.

Haha, yea i won't next time, lesson learned...

But i don't have another system with ddr4 so i'll just have to buy another one.

If the RAM stick came out while the computer was running, then it's a bit tricky.

Could be the RAM stick / motherboard / CPU that could be damaged.

Do you get any error / beep codes when you try to power system without RAM?

How does the computer / rest of the system (e.g. graphics card, fans, LED lights, etc) behave when you try to power on the system?

Thanks for the reply,

On the day it happened, after the hit, the pc crashed as in no display no lights nothing was on. So pressing the power button i get nothing, no beep codes, no lights, no fans turning on, no signs of life OTHER than the power light on my gpu.

Originally thought the psu died on me (which could be entirely possible and destroyed everything else on its death), so i tested it and surely enough i couldn't see or feel the fans spinning in the psu, so i replaced it, the system still doesn't work.

Now i'm at lost at which component is really dead.

We know the PSU is fine.

The graphics card is most likely fine as well.

SSD / HDD should not be affected.

Next step would be getting a new stick of DDR4 RAM, and see how the system responds.

If system boots up, yay.

If not, then you may have to find out if the problem is with the motherboard or CPU next.

Alright, cool.

Looks like we have to go through the hard way :|

Anyways thanks for your help @-rascal- and @Applefreak. I shall now order another stick of ram, whilst waiting im going to do more research...

Wish you guys the best surviving the pandemic!
