4670k vs 8320....

I know what the differences in performance will be while gaming, but I'm also going to be using this computer for music production(just for fun, not professionally or anything).  I'm using ableton live 9, and on my current computer with an intel q6600, the cpu meter gets close 100% relatively often when I'm using multiple plugins.  Does anyone know if either cpu will be significantly better than the other for music production?

intel option = more pricey

amd option = lest cost heavy

 

both are good cpus though

Either really. If it was video or photo editing/rendering, maybe some 3D work, then I would say get the i5. But for music creation and gaming, either would be fine.

The 8320 overclocks like a dog, so i would recommend the 8350 instead. You could probably just overclock that Q6600 to 3.5GHz and call it a day

1.multi-core optimized

or

2. strong per core performance optimized

 

 

if it's option 1. , then get 8320

if it's option 2, then get 4670K

 

also another consideration is that with intel you can use thunderbolt

You guys do realise that in music production more cores (actually more specifically more threads) is always better right?

The 8320 is definitely the way forward in this scenario but if you can stretch your budget look at some of the Intel 6-cores? I have no idea what your budget is but yeah...

Kinda, yes. I do everything on an Atom N270, and I know how painful it is. Jumping up to an A6-3650 is a TON better when I edit videos.

a few select single threaded apps is fine 5 years ago but even phone apps are multithreaded now, even minecraft and world of tanks...

The Intel 6 cores are to expensive for me.  It seems like the 8320 is the way to go though because it's quite a bit cheaper than the 4670k, but is still getting recommended over it.

Yeah for music production the 8320 really is the one for you you'll love it tbh, I've had a lot of experience with it and haven't had any problems with it yet.

nope, has been evenly threaded for a while, no bottleneck. same for skyrim etc etc.

last game to be badly threaded was world of tanks (core 1-100%, core 2-30%, core 3-0%, core 4-0%) but the latest update fixed that, its now able to put 2 heavy threads on 2 cores at 70% each and the other 2 threads hover around 20% a peice, no core is maxed. even if it was thats what turbo is for...

i dont know about WOW or swtor though, im not even going to test those games.

i maintain if single core performance is that important why doesnt everyone have i3's. seems like a good idea, 4 threads when you need it, 2 cores when you dont.

the fx8's are just hardware hyperthreading, wheras code has to be written to use hyperthreading (and its been shown to be fairly split) amd's approach has dedicated integer units, say what you will about sharing resources (not always bad thing in itself) software will always see 8 threads and use as many as its written to, as time goes on more and more will be programmed to do it as we've seen.

im considering a 7850 isntead of an 8320, its only 2 modules 4 threads but having 8 compute units and HUMA with cheap 2133 ram could lead to some awesome stuff in the future, but its a gamble...
