hey everyone new to the forum but been watching linus for years now

im currently looking into upgrading my pc as its been a few years and looking for the best way to go really not upto date on the bets cpu's atm

my current build is
i7 - 4770k was oc'd to 4.5 but took it off about a year back

Corsair H100i cooler
gtx 1080ti no really needing to upgrade that at the moment
16gb ram this is ddr3 though ...

ax860 corsair gpu think this would still be okay to use in a new build ?

and everything else is ssd's which im wanting to add a m.2 for the os in the new build

currently swinging between amd and intel with honestly no clue which would be better
mostly a gaming machine on 1440p monitor
whenever i look up comparisons between intel and amd when i comes to gaming its always 1080p benchmarks for some reason

everything having to be an atx format for my Corsair Obsidian 750D case to match it up

my thoughts were to go for
intel i7 9700k but i honestly dont know how much of a difference i would see both having 8 cores  with the 4770k having 4 threads where 9770k doesnt :? bit confused
corsair vengence rgb pro 32gb  2x16gb ddr4 @3200

and a samsung 970 evo 1tb ?

or amd ryzen 9 3900x or ryzen 7 3800x
with same ram and m.2

thanks for any recommendations

Not sure why you considered the 3800x, it’s just an overclocked version of the 3700x really, and Samsung drives are overpriced

Now that the Ryzen 9 prices are starting to drop you might be able to get one

Intel’s reign over the desktop cpu market is now over, and their laptop cpu’s Dies to the 3rd gen Ryzen Mobile chips. Intel 10th gen is definitely not built on 7nm or lower architecture

If you are happy with your current performance then I would hold fire for 6 months and see where we are with the new AMD cpu's and new Nvidia/AMD gpu's.

tbh i feel my current just struggles with a lot of random jobs atm

6 months seems a bit of a far wait for me atm plus iv been wanting to upgrade for a while just getting round to it now

just trying to look at what is best in terms of not breaking the bank but still getting good parts

That cpu should still be decent if you are just gaming. The new Ryzen 4000 series doesn't have a release date yet (maybe due to Covid-19) but if they keep on track it should be Q4 2020.

If you feel you want a new cpu now then a 3700X and an MSI B450 MAX board along with some DDR4 3000 - 3600 Ram is what I would be looking at.

You Corsair AX psu is fine to reuse. You can also reuse the H100i but check if it has an AM4 bracket. You should be able to get one from Corsair if not.

For the SSD I would look at other brands, as Samsung are expensive. A WD Blue SN550 is a good budget option for a gaming pc.

yea tbh its needing a revamp sooner than the 4th quarter

with the 3700x vs the 3900x the 3900x will be a bit more future proof in terms i wont need to upgrade it as soon as the other so id rather go for longevity

looking at the motherboard tier list
the msi b450 max is pretty low what makes u suggest that out of curiosity?

thanks again btw

An 8 core will be solid for a good while. You can always put a Ryzen 4000 in there in the future (12 - 18 months) when prices have dropped.

The MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX or Gaming Pro Carbon etc. They will easily handle a 3700X, and will be fine with a stock 12/16 core like the 3900X/3950X. If you wanted a better VRM then you are looking at boards like the Asus X570 TUF or Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite. There is also an MSI X570 Tomahawk which was announced at CES in Jan, but not sure on the release date. Looks to have a solid VRM though.

Yeah the 4000 series will be the last cpu on AM4. After that we move on to DDR5 more than likely.

The new Intel 14nm+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ or whatever they are calling it will be on a new Z490 chipset.
