Hi everyone!

I've been planing to build a gaming PC for around 900-1000eur (for 1080p/1440p gaming) and I've been kinda stuck on choosing a GPU.

So far I've narrowed it down to either an RTX2060 or the RX5700 but I can't really decide which would be the more optimal choice.

The 2060 costs about 30eur cheaper where I live than the 5700, but is it better to spend a bit more and have the extra 2GB of memory or is that an upgrade that will not be significant?

I'm quite new to this, so I don't really know what to look for and when the increase in spec numbers means a noticeable increase in actual use.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

There are a few things to consider, first of all you will have to get used to the fact that Radeon drivers are a little dodgey and so you could experience small issues however if you watch this video:

You will see the large frames benefit and it’s up to you whether the cost satisfies this, also in the furniture when the drivers are better, you may get better frames with the rx 5700, I am a rx 5700 xt user so I’d also listen to the opinion of a GeForce user but that’s my take.

If you don't care about NVENC or Shadowplay, then the 5700 would be a solid choice for your budget. You could possibly even flash a 5700XT BIOS onto it (though it's never guaranteed to work) and you'd be in 2060S or even slightly better territory in terms of performance.

I'd also expect the 5700 to enlarge its lead compared to the 2060 in the future, based on AMD's track record of their driver updates, so depending on how long you plan on keeping the card that could also be a factor to consider.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

I saw a jayztwocents video on the rx 5700 xt bios flash and it looked really sketchy because if the silicon can’t reach those clocks with it still being stable your card is not looking good and also if you mess it up then...

5700 and flash the BIOS, unless you need NVENC.

That will be about the same perf and be chaper.

To everyone posting about messy AMD Radeon drivers: Thats over! I have a 5700XT and I have build multiple PCs with RDNA cards. No problems what so ever!

Yeah I mean as I said, it's not guaranteed to work, and I wouldn't do it unless I really needed the extra couple frames.

If you get a ref PCB the chances are  high for it working

Never said that it won't work, I just said that it's not guaranteed. There's a reason why the 5700XT is a different SKU in and of itself.

Thanks for the replies!

I was looking more at the 5700, cause I'll definitely be going with an AMD cpu, probably the Ryzen 5 2600.

Unfortunately, the 3600 is a bit out of my budget and a 900$ US build is about a 1100eur build in Latvia.

Are there any specific models to be wary off? If I remember correctly the MSI Evoke and the Asus TUF had pretty bad thermals (at least on launch)

exactly those are to be avoided.

Saphire and PowerColor make great cards that are not to expensive the Pulse or RedDragon
