It doesn't have a direct inpact on performance in it self, and the size is just a matter of when or how fast you'll have to refill it. Incase there's a ninja air bubble that need to get replaced by water. And then ofcause the main purpose of the resservoir is to feed the pump with water. Having a good reservoir will however most often mean that it's silent, or atleast close to being silent.

do i need a big reservoir? does it affect performance if i get a small one and what is a good reservoir and pump config which is silent and small?

You can build watercooling loops without a reservoir and they will still work. It does not affect performance at all. The reason for reservoirs is so while bleeding air bubbles, they have somewhere to go. It also makes filling you loop much easier.

Hence the answer to your question is no, small ones don't make a difference,  some larger ones can make bleeding air easier though.

Reservoir and pump combos usually lead to better pump performance because the water is fed directly into the pump which is better for the pump.

There is no better reservoir and pump config. The main worry is a pump and for that I recommend a Laing D5 or a Laing DDC.
