Windows freezes on startup

This is a system i built back in 2014 and there has been no recent hardware changes or bios changes. The system worked fine this morning but over the past few weeks when restarted from the os it would not restart but turning it off and back on helped. Before this issue started i saw my i5 voltage go up to 1.463V then i shut down and cleared cmos since that voltage is very high for haswell but then after that it hasn't been back into windows.

Yeah, the voltage definitely shouldn't have went that high for i5-4670K. Unfortunately, it is very possible that that much voltage has fried the CPU and will need to be replaced to be able to boot into the OS again. If you are still planning to overclock with a different processor, please make sure that you have a good air-cooler or water cooling system to prevent potential damage to the CPU and to be safe don't set the voltage higher than the stock to eliminate risk of damaging the CPU (try increasing clock speed by increments without changing voltage). I would try to get an i7-4790K refurbished or used as an upgrade since even another i5-4670K in new condition would be unreasonably expensive.

Hello i have this issue where windows will freeze either on start up or in the OS. My hardware is a gigabyte gaming 7 z97 mobo, i5 4670k, 16gb ddr3, GTX 980, hx850i psu, and a samsung ssd. I have tried 2 different ram kits and each ram slot, then i tried different sata cables and sata ports on the motherboard, then i took out the gpus and used integrated graphics, then i unplugged all the drives and booted it off of a windows USB stick and it froze as soon as it booted off the USB. Then i changed the pci slot the gpu was in and it went farther and got into windows but as soon as it hit the desktop it froze. All the fans are spinning and the motherboard lights are on and the post code is A0. Also a restart/power cycle did not help. Do you guys have any ideas? i don't know what else to try.

Is this happening with a new system that you have built, after any hardware upgrades/changes, or happening without any hardware-related changes and has worked without issues previously?

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

Yeah, the voltage definitely shouldn't have went that high for i5-4670K. Yeah. the max voltage for haswell is 1.35V. I have a 240mm radiator and the temps were 70C at 1.46V, I attempted it to be stable at 4.6ghz through a 3d mark run which it was but must of died shortly after. im just going to get a used 4670k just to make it till i build my new system after social distancing is over. I did run it overclocked at 4.4ghz at 1.32V for around 6 years

I got a used i5 4670k and my computer boots up fine now. What do you think of the overclock i got on it? 4.8 ghz at 1.295V in bios and 1.320V under stress testing

Congratulations for repairing your system, I would highly recommend disabling the adaptive voltage setting in your UEFI BIOS to prevent the motherboard from going past your set voltage since thinking that it needs to do so to achieve the set clock speed. The maximum that I would go for overclocking (voltage) on this chip would be no further than 1.350 volts, for maximum longevity I would recommend leaving at stock or playing around only with increasing the clock speed (with adaptive voltage disabled and leaving voltage at stock). The average overclock for the Core i7 4670K is around 4.3 to 4.4 GHz at 1.20V, just make sure that the temperatures under load are cool (stay under 70 degrees celsius) and you should be fine with your current OC.

Ok, here are my current temps during a cinebench run at 1.3V with a 240mm AIO at 75% fan speed

What did you set as the fan curve for the AIO cooler, these temperatures are a bit high, under heavy loads for this overclocked processor I would recommend having the AIO at full rated speed when under generally higher loads?

Recommended AIO Fan Curve to Set with Overclocked Core i5 4670K:

100% at 70 degrees celsius

85% at 62 degrees celsius

75% at 53 degrees celsius

50% at 46 degrees celsius

25% at 38 degrees celsius

12.5% at 20 degrees celsius or lower

i reapplied thermal paste and are these temperatures any better? I don't have the tools needed for deliding or lapping
