1060 low performance

Recently I upgraded my gpu from gtx 770 to gtx 1060 - 3gb due to getting good deal on one. I’ve however countered an issue with the 1060.

my fps on csgo went crazy bad. Was hitting quite stable 200 to 300 Depending on the map, with surf maps etc I was hitting 450+. Now with the 1060 I seem to struggle with getting ”even” 200 on most maps, going as low as 100 to 120 on maps such as Overpass.

I didnt change anything else on my setup, i5-4670k @ 4,2ghz, 8gb kingston ddr3 1600mhz, corsair 650w bronze (if i remember correctly) and some 250 gb ssd.

The gpu runs around ~30% while in csgo, which ofc is cpu heavy game but I just dont get how a gpu change can fuk up my fps so hard.

I found a lot of threads about people having issues with -10XX cards & csgo but not any solutions, so guys any info is welcome. Would love to keep the 1060 but if it performs so much worse there is no point.. :(

e. Resolution etc doesnt really have any effect. Im playing on quite low settings already.

So how does it compare on a benchmark? Still hits 99%? What program are you using to watch the usage and how is the rest of the system performing in said game?

I haven’t done any benchmark and the usage is from taskmanager. I can provide some actual benchmarks tomorrow. The Fps difference can be seen in csgo quite clearly. I noticed my cpu usage is tiny bit higher on avg with the 1060 and when my fps goes really low, to 100 or so my cpu usage hits 100%. That never happens with the 770.

Well I’ve never seen task manager show proper usage on a build in a long time. Only when I swap gpus and don’t do the drivers again.
The cpu going to max is from a stronger gpu. Thus being a bottleneck now. Could try some bandaids unless there’s another issue like lack of ram or speed of it. Or both in this case.

Yeah I totally get that the i5-4670K even while being OC’d is outdated. However the part that I do not get is that with worse gpu I still get significantly better performance on a CPU-heavy game. Thats the weird thing. Also CS:GO should be able to run easily ~300 or even more fps with the 4670 on 4,2ghz with low settings and it does when I use the worse gpu.

also you are right about the reliability of the task manager, but the difference is honestly like 100 fps all the time so it is very noticeable. With the 770 usage is hoovering anywhere between ~70 to near 100% and with the 1060 the usage is from ~30 to 50ish.

why does it drop my fps though and is there anything I can do about it is the main question.

Well its clear the cpu cant handle the old card either if the usage gets that low.  Did you bother to look at the ram usage at any point? Is that 2 sticks or one? If you aren't watching per core usage then you really cant see how its effecting each card.

Sounds theres money to be spent somewhere.

Hmm, yet with the old card im getting avg 100+ fps more. :X

its 2x4 ram. Any specific benchmarks that u would like to see?

Did you use DDU and install fresh drivers for the 1060?

Check Nvidia control panel settings to make sure you have all the prefer maximum performance options enabled rather than power saving ones.

Well you said it yourself the gpu goes down to 70% usage so that means the cpu can’t handle it.

I don’t wonna see benchmarks I wonna see per core usage and ram usage.

Yes all of those are done.

As I said before, csgo is really cpu-heavy game thus gpu usage rarely goes up. With higher image settings I can however get the 770 to 100% usage.

Regardless, the cpu can’t handle it. That’s how that works. If your cpu can’t keep up with the frames, gpu usage drops unless you are using a frame limiter.

Weird since people with mot worse cpus get better performance. Also the question remains the same, why does my fps drop with better gpu.

I doubt that’s the case if the factors are the same.
I can’t tell you why with little to no info.
Haven’t compared them both to see how it effects the system so it’s normally quite clear. Either you need to run ddu and reinstall the drivers or upgrade or put the old better card in.

Borrowed 970 from a friend and there seems to be no issues with it. Im starting to think that the issue might be with the 1060 as a gpu. Might be some troubled individual, dunno.

Couldn't say, haven't seen how it runs to compare.
