Hi everyone

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, motherboard and memory later this year. A couple of months ago I upgraded my GPU and SSD which is why I'm only looking at upgrading CPU, mobo and RAM for now. I've always been a console gamer but this year I have really enjoyed PC gaming and so I'm wanting to upgrade my PC so it's able to play similar Xbox Series X games, Halo Infinite in particular.

From doing some research I've had conflicting opinions, almost all 'Xbox Series X PC builds' have used either a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or even a 1600 AF both 6 core 12 thread CPU's or the AMD Ryzen 7 3700 a 8 core 12 thread CPU but unfortunately for me the R7 3700 is too expensive. Becuase it's too expensive my question is, how important is 8 cores going to be over the next 4-5 years? I would rather go for a cheaper CPU like the R5 1600 AF but if games are going to be more dependant on 8 cores in say a year or two, I don't want to be spending more money to upgrade my CPU again. I've also been looking at the AMD R7 2700x as it falls in my price range with 8 cores however, when comparing it to the R5 3600, the R5 3600 averages higher FPS in todays games which makes it a better choice for now but I don't know whether that will change if games switch to being more reliant on more cores.

Additionally I'm planning on buying the Gigabyte Aorus B450 mini ITX motherboard and 16GB of DDR4 3200 MHz ram to accompany which ever AMD CPU I end up purchasing.

I look forward to getting your thoughts on these questions and a bit of advise.

Thanks in advance. Matt

what gpu do you have? to save some money, i'd build in a mAtx case, not in a mini-itx.

i think in the next 1-2 years, there won't be a huge difference between 6 and 8 cores, provided you have multithreading. it would probably help if you want to keep the cpu for much longer, say 4-5 years.

i would go for the r5 3600, as it's currently giving the best performance and I'm sure it will be at least on par, if not better than the xbox x and ps5 cpus, which sound like modern r7 1700 cpus, judjing by the specs.

I have a AMD RX 5700. I'm also looking at a mini ITX motherboard because I already have a ITX case I will be using from a previous build.

You're saying the R5 3600 will cover me, CPU wise, for the next 4-5 years? Even if games move to using more cores?

you can never know for 4-5 years. some games will be better optimised for more cores, others won't. i think the r5 3600 will give better performance than the current games than the xbox x, but I can't say what will be in 4 years time. the point is having a cpu with hyperthreading. the difference between 12 and 16 threads isn't that big, and the 3600 seems to be able to make up that difference with single core performance vs the 2700x.
