My current build is:

CPU: FX 6300

Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600

MB: GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P (rev. 2.0) AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

GPU: MSI GTX 960 4GB

Storage: 500 GB Samsung 850 evo SSD and WD Blue 1TB 7200 RPM

PSU: CORSAIR CX-M series CX500M 500W 80 PLUS BRONZE

I am looking to spend about $300 USD to upgrade my PC now with another $300 - $400 coming about a year later. I am looking for a good starting point and a road map for the future for a gaming PC to play most games now at 1440p 60fps. I am not sure what to upgrade first I know that if I go down the path of CPU upgrade I would need to upgrade MB and RAM at the very least. Although if I go down the GPU upgrade path I am not sure if it will be compatible with my current system. Any suggestions and questions would be helpful.

I would honestly upgrade the CPU and GPU, but that would cause you to get a whole new Motherboard and RAM. Right now I would go with the CPU, if you are willing to put down an extra 50-100 dollars. The Ryzen 5 3600 is a sweet spot and you can get a decent b450 motherboard for 90-110 dollars. Ryzen does love fast ram however, so I would get a 3200 kit at the minimum. I may sound like Linus saying this, but got to Micro Center (if you are in the US). They have alot of sweet deals and if you keep an eye out you can even get a decent bundle deal for both the cpu and mobo.
