What would you suggest I do so I don't lose the data on both drives?

Do you have backups of the data?

Id setup backups first, then make the raid.

raid is not a backup, so don't setup raid as the only way to prevent data loss. Lots of things can happend to cause the whole raid array to be lost.

I have some files backed up online (eg. photos, videos, school work, etc.), but I also have a bunch other data (eg. special applications and the files in them) that isn't backed up.

Then Id backup all of those files first. Something like a external hdd is good backups.

Maybe he just wanted to boost the read speed, or it could be that at least if one drive fail, he can still use the system.
