Windows 10 Safely remove Media Problem

I have a big problem with Windows 10 and the powering down of ANY and ALL forms of media when going to the Safely remove hardware and eject media.

 

I will give an example, lets just say that i choose to eject a USB hard drive, i go to eject the media and the power light on the hard drive will go out.  I know the drive still hasn't powered down for 2 reasons, 1 i can feel the vibration and 2 when i pull out the Power Cable from the hard drive windows makes the noise as if hardware has been disconnected.

 

This also happens with USB Pen drives.

 

Anyone have any ideas? as its driving me nuts.

They should power down when you pull the USB cable out, although there really shouldn't be any issue with just disconnecting the power cable either.

 

Once Windows has safely removed the drive, just listen for the drive heads to stop moving and all data should have been saved.

Its absolutely normal for the drives to remain spinning whilever the USB cable is plugged in.

All normal. It only makes sure pending transfers are flushed, doesn't actually power anything down.

Some drives will power themselves down when they get ejected, some will continue running but turn off a LED like yours seems to do, some will not do anything visible. All up to the device.

The removal of peripherals (USB,Storage, BD, DVD...etc,.) can be challenging with Windows 10 and its predecessors since Windows 95b. The only software that I could offer as a suggestion and that works well would be: USB Safely Remove (https://safelyremove.com)

 

Got an external Dedicated Raid 10 Box that has 8x 10TB Drivers and yes... you want to make sure it unplugs correctly via USB or SATA ports.

Tried this software and still it doesnt allow me to remove without turning off the device.

 

There has to be a corruption in windows somewhere.

Your initial post showed nothing wrong. Has something changed? You say "doesn't allow to remove", does it mean you get the "can't eject" prompt?

We are a bit confused here. You cannot compare USB Thumb drives with a Hard Disk Drive.

Yes, both should safely be removed via the normal steps but in your case...

 

1) When you take the power out all of a sudden on an HDD, 3 things will happen (3rd one a maybe)

1a) You will hear a click because the needle goes to it default position which is normal

1b) It will take 2-5 seconds for the disks inside the drive to stop spinning

1c) It can corrupt your data and/or the hardware

 

Clearly you are talking about a HDD but we have no clue if you are referring to a HDD that powers via USB (single cable) or an HDD that requires external Wall Jack Power.

 

An HDD (single cable) like the Passport ones will have an LED that will turn of or blink really slowly (like sleep mode) which is safe to pull.

 

On older HDD with external power cable and especially those IDE older connection. Even if you safely take the USB, the HDD is still active but should be in idle mode. Basically is still spinning but it will idle up which is normal.

That's just it @Elsa Ballerinathey don't become idle, its as if i've never clicked to remove them.

Again, perfectly normal for some devices. I have some that stop and some that don't. Those that don't may not turn off fully, but they've put themselves in a safe state for disconnection regardless.

If a drive enclosure doesn't want to spin down the drive when ejected that's how it is. And the eject command never causes a complete USB disconnect so you'll always hear the USB disconnect sound when you unplug.

Not all drives power themselves down when using the Safely Remove Hardware option - all that option does is tell Windows to stop reading/writing data to the drive. After that, it's entirely up to the drive manufacturer to have the drive itself stop spinning.
