You can check if the cutouts for the switches look like the left or right

If it looks like the left one, you can get a tool to open the switch without desoldering. If it's the right one, you're out of luck.

Is that common? Somehow all the keyboards I lubed didn't require desoldering.

This is correct. Another thing to consider is the LEDs, if you have through hole LEDs you will need to desolderer them to open the switch. If you have SMD LEDs or no LEDs at all you're good (assuming plate cutout is correct as well).

If you want to lube them properly (spring, slider, housing) evenly then you most likely should desolder. Unless it's hotswap or you don't have the time to desolder, then there's not really a proper way. Dropping in lube is meh in my experience.

I'm not sure how you arrived at this conclusion. I've done it both ways and other than the way you open the switch the process and results have been identical.
