So I recently bought a new DELL gaming monitor that's 120Hz, on like my 3 year old gaming setup, and playing games I noticed I really cant reach 120Hz on most of them. Im gonna use GTA 5 as an example, on which I barely reach `70ish FPS, on ultra settings at 1080p, I have a GTX 960 4GB GDDR5 GPU and GTA5 is one game among a couple of other on which I cant reach taht 120FPS, so I'm browsing between choices for a new GPU because It was finally time for an upgrade. Which one would be better between an RTX 2060 Super 8GB, and an RTX 2070 8GB, from what I've checked they are pretty similar, but in a game like GTA 5 which I used as an example, which one of those GPU's would give me the crisp 120FPS im searching for, rest of my computer specs below.

CPU: Intel i5 6500 Quad-Core 3.2GHz
RAM: 12GB DDR4 2133MHz
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 960 4GB GDDR5
SSD: 120GB Gigabyte SATA3
HDD: 1TB TOSHIBA SATA3
PSU: I'm not sure about the PSU but I think it was around 600W or 500W
Monitor: DELL S2419HGF 120Hz 1080p (using Displayport)

Look at YouTube. If you expect that on ultra settings you can get 120FPS on modern games, then it may be impossible (except very expensive configurations). Lowering settings may help (with new card). And probably you'll see no difference.

GTA5 is one of the games I mentioned, because its the one I am currently playing a lot, and since im already hitting 70~ish FPS on ultra settings and 1080p, I think that a better GPU, would be just enough to hit 120, I dont play extremely high end games like shadow of the tomb raider for example, I guess you could say Im asking specifically for GTA, but other games I play like are The Forest for example, which are not that high end.

Your CPU bottlenecks your max/fps and/or refresh rate, probably want to replace that for for 120fps gaming, as you could always drop your graphics down to like 720p low and that 960 can get 120fps at those settings.

Also I think the Navi Cards are cheaper than their 2060 super/2070 counterparts, so probably go for those.

What's your total budget though?

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

budget is around 500$ max i could squeeze out is 600$, since im playing GTA5 rn as i said i want to potentially hit 120FPS in that game on ultra settings in 1080p

Looks like you can just barely get a CPU/GPU upgrade

What i would suggest doing is buy the R5 3600 + AM4 Board + RX 5700 if it's that cheap

reuse your current DDR4 RAM

Sell the old stuff

Buy 3600mhz CL16 RAM

Assuming your PSU isn't the cheapest OEM Chinese weighs 10 grams thing, not that you'll use more than 400W max anyways, 300W should be typical.

Maybe spend $8 more on this board for it's CPU-less USB bios flashing for recovery, also has a bigger VRM "heatsink"

MSI is supposed to have fixed or will fix any evoke memory temp issues, so there's that, as to why that 5700 is so cheap.

This is great, but I kinda forgot to mention in the previous paragraphs that the CPU is overclocked to 3.6GHz and I have a DeepCool Radiator* with a 1500 RPM Fan as cooling for the CPU, sorry again i was just reading through everything again

*heatsink, i meant heatsink, sorry again

here's some CPU testing, I also edited the post a bunch

i have no idea why 2060 supers are $100 more expensive than some 5700s, the 5700s have the same performance.

The OC really won't matter too much since it's only a 4 core 4 thread CPU

Yours would just be a bit behind the 6600K here

There's also something to be said of frame consistency when you have more cores/threads to a point for background tasks.

This is actually a lot more help than I was expecting, thanks for being nice and thorough, and actually bothering lmao. Will take everything into consideration, and thank you again for the help.
