Did you assign the server a Static IP? If you left it to DHCP you should be able to see the interface IP with:

ip a

Or do you not have physical access to the Ubuntu server?

I take it this VPS is being hosted somewhere? Is it being hosted by a company or is it being privately hosted? Who has access to the server?

There are ways to look-up network clients but if someone has access to the network I would expect someone to have physical access to the server.

It sounds like your provider is some kind of a friend or a friend of a friend.

Most virtual machine software give you access to the server from its own software.

Your provider can check if the VPS have a network card and what MAC it have, then check if the server is on the network or not.

the problem was never the network... The problem was that the vps got corrupted
