Hello everyone. I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me with . I am new to the sever/nas scene. I picked up an hp proliant dl380 g6 if someone on craigslist for free and thought I would start tinkering with it. It has dual 4 core xeons and 64gb of storage.  My questions are what in your guys opinions be the best software and programs to use to get this going as a game server to run minecraft/ark servers and to use as storage or maybe some plex. Any point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

if you have no idea what you're doing (not meant in a bad way), it's probably best to either toss windows 10, or xubuntu on it. in a sense the hardware isnt any different from a regular desktop, besides ECC memory, dual CPU's posing latency concerns with memory access, and a built in RAID card.

my home server runs just a basic "out of the box" xubuntu install, with virtualbox VM's for stuff that doesnt run under linux.

You will need Windows for ARK & Minecraft. Windows 10 Pro has everything you'll need, theres no need for Windows Server unless you want Domain Control.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

Personally I'd install a hypervisor like PROXMOX. Anything that needs to run under Windows can run in a VM. Then you can host a network storage share on the host in a container then QEMU for virtualized game servers.
