Since my home nas/server pc is nearing the end of it's life and usefulness with it's current cpu power it will be replaced soon. So as it's going to be replaced and I'll have to reconfigure a lot anyways I thought why not ask here to see if I can improve anything about the current backup situation.

Current situation sketch:

To backup systems:

Multiple home users and computers (mom, dad and little brother)

How I do it now:

Server copies the files from the computers in question via goodsync to itself. There it gets stored on a single hdd which then copies to another identical one.

Each file has 3 revisions kept.

Server then sync's with backblaze in the cloud continuously and keeps documents stored there.

Everyone can access the server via a network drive/folder on their system but this also allows them to see the others data which is a flaw and is one I will fix next time.

It's been running like that for 6 years on server 2012 with almost no downtime. It's also been a webserver, mc server,... because it does run vmware esxi somehow.

Anything I should improve about this?

Current specs:

athlon 5350 (it's horrible by now)

generic asrock itx board

16gb of ram

2* 6tb hdd + 120gb ssd bootdrive

300w bequiet

Will be upgraded to

Some ryzen quad core or good used find

16gb ram

Same drives

Same psu

Same case

Why don't just get another server for the more heavy lifting tasks?

My bad forgot to mention that part from sometimes running a minecraft server maybe it's just gonna be a file server. I also need to replace this system as the motherboard is failing. It started bending for some reason and if not enough pressure is given by 2 screws to prevent the bend it will refuse to work.

Get a Ryzen 3 or 5 (whatever fits for budget) and an Asrock/MSI/ASUS/Gigibyte B450 or X570 mainboard (again as budget allows) and a 1x 16GB RAM stick, as to keep your options for expansion open.

If you're up for a nice challenge, try Linux on the new NAS. It offers strict separation of user access and a fine grain control system over who accesses what. And it's free ;)
