It's a system of equations. The first one defines z in terms of x and y. The second one requires to apply the definition of orthogonality to z and y. The last one is yet another equation with the same variables, and you have to substitute some of the previous ones to show it holds, possibly applying the definition of unit vector along the way.

 

It is unnecessarily notation-heavy, though.
