All it does is ground the ports to the motherboard, not really a disaster if you don't use it. Of course, it's quite ugly with that hole there, I wouldn't leave it open if I didn't have to.

My new mobo didnt come with one, so I just didnt use one

No it won’t, but if you bought it new, ask for an io shield,
