I have never seen a device with display port in real life. Can't say anything bad about regular HDMI, but there are also mini & micro versions that are fragile. In general just use port that both of devices support, any adapters add some lag.

most graphics cards from 2016 have displayport and hdmi and the monitors as well have it but only recently .

DisplayPort is more flexible, and depending on version it has better bandwidth than hdmi and support more formats and modes.

HDMI is less flexible and has multiple versions and you need some minimum version to have some features, like let's say at least hdmi 2.0 for 4K @ 60 Hz (while you could do that with DisplayPort 1.4)... it's also more limited when it comes to color formats (ex you can do YCbCr 4:4:4 or 4:2:0 but you may not have 4:2:2 which is considered semi-professional or crap like that)

You can make your own comparison by looking at Wikipedia and see the differences:

hmm sounds good. I just wasn't sure about the differences there. I am considering a monitor upgrade down the road so having the info for the current video standard connectors is important. I want to buy a 24 inch 1440p or better monitor with hdmi displayport and dvi if possible however I am not sure what brand is going to really work well for me. besides by that time navi should be able to match 280ti.

You won't find DVI anymore on new monitors because it's considered obsolete. Well, you may find it when it's used as a combo with vga (because it has vga pins in the connector) or as an extra, besides hdmi and displayport.

Either way, modern video cards won't offer DVI in the future. You still see it on cheaper cards like GTX 1050 or GT 1030, because those are marketed to people with low budgets and old monitors, which are likely to have dvi.

DVI Single Link can do only 1920x1200 60 Hz or something like 2560x1600 30 Hz, while the DVI Dual link can do up to 2560x1600 60 Hz.

The connector is too big (blocking too much area on the bracket of the video card which is bad for airflow) and wasn't even very reliable from the start (it wasn't designed for lots of insertions, I think the original connectors had maximum 50-100 insertions or something like that... some hdmi and displayport connectors are rated for hundreds of insertion cycles)

Overall, DisplayPort should work better with high refresh rates and odd resolutions like 1440p.
