Hi guys,

Ive decided to change my cpu thermal paste after a while, like the other times ive done it it worked just fine after, but this time after applying the paste and putting it all back together it doesnt even post. It tries to boot, few seconds later it just dies and after a moment tries to post again and it keeps doing it. Ive noticed that the cpu light on the motherboard whenever it tries to post, what should I do?

likely you forgot to plugin the ATX power at the left top of your motherbaord, like myself 2 weeks ago XD

if OP only took the CPU cooler off, how would that happen?

@Juggyx3 have you made sure the mounting pressure is good? have you tried taking the CPU out and putting it back in?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

There's nothing required for me to unplug to replace the paste, ive removed the heatsink, wiped it off, applied few dabs of the paste, put the heatsink back, tightened as much as I could, put the fan back on. Got all the cables back in and it just didint boot. Could it be that ive put too much paste and when it got into contact with the heatsink some of it got onto the mobo around the cpu?

Do you know if the thermal paste the conductive kind or not? If its conductive it could be that some went astray and is shorting the components.

Another other possibility is that that you bent a pin on the cpu socket if you took it when cleaning it. Only way to be sure its to dismantle and look sadly.

I'm an IT System Admin with 15+ years worth of XP, plus I've been tinkering computers since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver, so I usually know what I'm talking about.

Pop it off and have a good look at the socket and the pins. I just swapped to an AIO cooler and upon install I had damaged a few pins and had no post as well. Not sure what CPU or socket style you have, but may have happened to you too. It was a combination of the CPU pin repair, along with some USB components actually preventing post believe it or not for me. Unplug everything but peripherals after inspection and give it a whirl.

You could try pressing the BIOS reset button if you've got one (if you'r not worried about having to reapply those settings later). I had an ASUS board that sometimes had to do that with, never figured out why. Not happy with the XMP profiles perhaps.

If it is an AMD, there is a way to pull out the cooler, twist a little and lift a little... repeat.

If you just pulled the cooler off, it might have unset the CPU, and if you put the cooler back without checking, may have damaged some pins.

Pull it apart again follow the procedure I mentioned above.

But I would like to know why do you have to do this a bunch of times...?

If temps are OK, I would think there should be no need to keep pulling the cooler and putting the same cooler back in..

If you had temp issues, maybe the case needs more / better airflow.

What method do you use for the thermal paste... Pea / cross / line in the middle / 2 lines...????

Also, make sure you do not over tighten the cooler, that has been known to cause issues as well.

^^^ Wiggling the cooler is a massive help for sure. Also... REMOVE THE STOCK THERMAL PASTE (the stuff that comes on the stock coolers/AIOs/what have you). That shit is glue I swear, it's far stickier than any thermal paste I've used, and seems to seize up with heat.

Right,so i've kinda found the cause of the issue. When i've removed the heatsink, after doing all the cleaning and re-applying the paste and the heatsink i've at one point ended up damaging some of the pins which caused it not to boot. Silly me,i know but thanks for all the brainstorming lads,i wouldn't have thought to look at the cpu pins if not for you gents.

Also to answer your Q's Geek, the paste haven't been changed for over a year, and it was starting to cause performance issues, temp spikes and shutdowns. And ive used pea method, but applied way to much.
