Hello!

I have been toying around with what I want my build to be for a little while now.  I thought I was set on a 3600.

Microcenter has the 2600x on sale for $80.00 right now and that caught my eye, I figured I could go lower budget build.

Does the 2600x still hold up?  I dont need to play ultra setting on the toughest games but I would like the freedom to play any game I throw at it.

The price difference between 2600 and 3600 is $70 right now at microcenter, would it be beneficial to use that $70 to buy a better GPU and then down the line upgrade the processor again?

I was also reading that it had some ram compatibility issues?

I was planning my initial budget around 800-900 in the tower itself.  But I am not opposed to go cheaper ?

It depends on the use case I would say. The 2600X is fine, and won't bottleneck most midrange cards. If you want super-high framerates in esports/competitive games the 3600 is a better pick, but for most things you'll see more benefit from a GPU upgrade.

I've never had any memory compatibility issues with my 2600, but I don't run particularly fast memory. That said, unlike 3rd gen, 2nd gen doesn't have a huge benefit from speeds above 3000Mhz or so.

That said, a 3600 for $150 is also a very good deal, and will allow for more GPU upgrades down the line.

yep, get the 2600x for that price and invest in a better gpu. especially if you're not after 240 fps and just play casually.

Thanks for the responses, although I really want to go with the 3600, I think it is smarter for me to go 2600 atm and put that money elsewhere like you guys were saying.

Any recommendations on GPU that would pair nicely with the 2600, 1080p 60hz is obviously the lowest end monitor i would like to use.   MSI Geforce gtx 1660 super is what I was originally looking at.

The 1660 super should be perfect for 1080p 60 in AAA games. If you’re struggling to hit that in something remember that ultra settings are resource hogs.

any suggestions on a motherboard, I see a lot of recommendations about the msi b450 tomahawk max, and was thinking I'd just stick with that.  $10 rebate, and $20 off when matched with a processor.

To clarify a little I was hoping to give myself some room to upgrade to the ryzen 3600 in the future after the 4000 series releases and if I can get it on a good sale.

Words of advice, be patient. Save and build a better system. Budget build never last long enough to justify the price of "budget".

A build will last as long as you want it to last. You don't need a high end system to be able to play games. If the op isn't bothered about max settings then a 2600X and 1660 Super is more than good enough for 1080p.

That’s the motherboard I’ve seen recommend a lot and the one I would go with. It’s one of the highest rated b450 boards from what I know. Just keep in mind it doesn’t have built in WiFi if you use that.

Ah, I would be hardwired anyway, but I was hoping to get some bluetooth going on it, so I guess I will do a little more research

It is ATX so you can always add in a pcie card or just a usb dongle. The usb approach might be an issue since it doesn’t have that many USB ports.

This should be labeled under false advertisement.

I built my pc back in 2012. I can still play games on it just fine with lower settings. So no it isn't false advertising. Only one giving bad advice is you.

I'm wondering how telling someone to save money and have patience is bad edvice? It is as the saying goes, common sense is uncommon.

You think everyone needs to spend $1500+ on a pc ? Yes he could wait and save money, but maybe that isn't an option. We don't know his financial situation. For 1080p/60Hz then an $800 - $900 build is more than good enough.
