Hi guys,

Just made the decision to just upgrade to an Alienware AW2518H(F).

I can get it for around 265€ new, and then i just have to decide if i go RTX or RX 5700XT.

I play on 1080p, and just want enough fps.

https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/1459354/msi-radeon-rx-5700-xt-gaming-x.html is this a good RX 5700xt? i can get it for around 380€

Or should i get an RTX 2070, which would cost me 495€ for the Gaming X trio version of MSi.

I have a Ryzen 7 3700X

B450 Tomahawk Max

16GB of ram.

Yeah but my 144hz doesn't have a display port, so it's the time to upgrade now.

Is the 5700xt good? Or does it reach high temps/noise from fans?

They’re similar wattage.  The issue with wattage is computers turn wattage into heat and heat has to be removed with a heat sink which has to be cooled by fans.  Bigger heat sink , mo’betta fans change things a little bit but in the end noise is mostly a factor of wattage.

The issues I’ve seen lately with the 5700xt mostly involve people having issues with driver software, not noise.  The 5700xt has a bit more performance than the 2070, but the 2070 has a few very specific features some may find useful.  Both are more than enough for 1080p. Enough that less than their full wattage will be needed to drive them which means less heat and therefore less noise.  So it’s a pretty hard thing to predict because the numbers are blurry.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

And are those drivers being fixed?

And would it be a problem if i buy the freesync version of the alienware 240hz screen and a RTX 2070 super?

Or isn't that worth the extra 120€ for the super ?

Driver issues tend to be solved over time.  The reports I’ve seen said they were basically gone.  I have no direct info.
Nvidia will do both gsynch and freesynch these days.

the 2070S is supposed to be slightly faster but often generally competitive with the 5700xt.  The biggest thing I personally see in the 2070s myself is it matches the largest possible currently predicted capacity of ps5/Scarlett.  There is a great deal of question as to whether or not 240hz provides any material gain over 144hz outside of very specific circumstances that mostly only matter to pro esports people.

Yeah but i have to upgrade, cause i can't get a 2070 with a DVI.

So i have to upgrade to a screen with a displayport, i could get a XL2411P (144HZ) but that is 199€.

So the extra 60€ for a 240hz isn't that bad i guess?

I'm pretty sure the RTX 2070 Founders Edition has a DVI port. Eventually you'll have to replace the screen because DVI is obsolete moving forward and the RTX 2070 has both HDMI and Displayport so it can accommodate that change. Outside of that the RX 5700 XT performs slightly better than the RTX 2070 and is better value for money but both will smash 1080p gaming - at 1080p the strain is more on the CPU to be honest.

Not that I could find, at least for dual-link dviD.  My choices were all AMD. Even a founders edition 1080ti didn’t have one.  Rx580 series, vega 56 and vega64

They say they are but i haven’t seen it happen for me. I rolled back to 19.12.1 drivers and it’s been rock solid. I have a rx5700 that I flashed the 5700xt bios on and the card is amazing at 1080p. I have a 144hz monitor and a ryzen 5 3600x and have no issues playing games.
