Windows activation issue

Yongtjunkit

Hi,

So I got the prompt to activate windows but this laptop comes with windows 8, so I’ve contacted dell and they said that to use windows 8.1/10, you’ll need to “purchase a product key”

Isn’t windows 8.1 a free upgrade to windows 8 user and windows 8 is EOL?

Just update to Windows 10, log in to your Microsoft account when asked and you will be just fine.

My memory is currently. Windows 8 key number will activate windows10.  Just try your win8 key and see what happens

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

There’s apparently no product key embedded into the bios for some reason or only the dell image can see

like windows 10 setup would ask for my product key

even produkey can’t see it

It’s not printed on the side of your machine or in some handbook or something?

Windows 10 setup will ask; choose I don't have a product key, install, then activate it using Control Panel to see if it will work.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, RTX2060) Mobile: OnePlus 5T | Koodo - 75GB Data + Data Rollover for $45/month

Not on the machine as far as I can tell... don’t have the handbook with me, according to dell it’s supposed to be embedded in the bios which is supposed to be the case for machines with win8 or newer as far as I know

This PC was never upgraded to windows 10

So this is theoretical?

Whoops.... @Bombastinator, sorry, accidentally merged your post inside @Yongtjunkit's post. Shit happens, it seems.

Anyway. Win7/8/.1 keys will activate as Win10 if you install Win10 and select to skip product key during installation. I've done this to two laptops, one being my own. It just works.

^^^^ That's my post ^^^^

If you don't have a key, but your system is Activated with Windows 7 or newer.

You can download the Windows 10 Download Tool to upgrade to Windows 10 (Not a clean install),

Once you boot into Windows 10 and it shows its activated with digital entitlement, you can do a clean install.

Unfortunately windows 8.1 single language isn’t activated even though it comes preloaded with windows 8 single language

Then you either have to buy a key or get a install media for your laptop, that supports the activation method implemented in the bios. It's usually easier to buy a new key. You could always take your chances with the grey market.
