Hi

This is my first time posting here and I've checked everywhere on Google but i cant find a solution to my problem. I hope someone here can help as i'm struggling. So i'm in the UK and just changed broadband providers for cost purposes keep in mind all my devices worked fine with my previous provider. So I have my Xbox and PC connected via Ethernet but as soon as I start using one the other device just has little to no connection it's as if it cant handle both wired connections at once. I can play Xbox fine when my PC is off and vise versa. I appreciate any solution to this and if you need any further information feel free to ask as i'm not an expert in networking although I know basic stuff.

What kind of internet? What speed package do you have?

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I'm with Vodafone and i have their top package, when it works I get around 37mbps but it doesn't even load when I have both devices on

Sounds like DSL. From their website it looks like 60 Mbps or so its the top end. DSL is distance limited so you might be a bit far from the CO to get that. Im going to take it you have a gateway (Modem/Router) supplied by them? Have you verified that with both devices on they get valid IP addresses? Almost sounds like an issue with both devices not getting a valid IP. Also do you get any warnings on either your Xbox or your PC?

What about WiFi devices, any issue there?

Yeah they provided their own router which I am using. WiFi works perfect and I can have around 5 devices connected at once and no issues it's just these Ethernet connections, i get no warnings per say just right now my Xbox won't connect to the internet as i'm currently using the PC. You mentioned the IP address and I've just noticed that they both have the same IP address's could this be the issue? If so how would I change this?

Two devcies cant have the same IP. Generally the routers DHCP server would assign IP addresses automatically to each device. Id check in the devices settings on DHCP settings. Generally there would be an IP range the server would use. Such as 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.254 or something to that degree. Though every router maker has diffrent settings.

In your computer go to Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Right click on Ethernet > Properties > Click on IPv4 > Properties > Make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected. If so, then check above with what @Donut417 mentioned and look on the router to make sure the DHCP scope is large enough.

Edit:

If you have a static IP set on your computer you could also just change the last octect (group of digits) to be +1 above what it currently is as well.

In those setting the "Obtain an IP address automatically" is checked and I hope i'm in the right place and this is what your looking for in my router settings but it's titled "DHCPv4 Server Parameters" and it says "pool start" and "pool end" and it starts with the end number being 2 and pool end last number is 200. I hope i'm explaining this properly and you get what I mean here ?

Hmmm, that's very odd then. That's the right place for both parts and the pool is plenty large enough so why the xbox and PC get the same IP is a little baffling. You could make note of the IP of the Xbox and then on the PC select the static IP radial and then put in the same first three octects (groupings) and then put the last octet to 220 or something. Then for subnet mask put in 255.255.255.0 and gateway will be the same 3 octets and 1 for the last number assuming you access the router with the .1 and not .254 or something else. (example: if your first three octets are 192.168.1 then IP will be 192.168.1.220 and gateway 192.168.1.1)

My only solution which isn't ideal but I have a wired connection to my PC as it doesn't have wireless and then my Xbox connected via WiFi and both devices work fine this way it's so strange why 2 wired connections can't work together. I appreciate you trying to help though @Lurick @Donut417

Yah, that's mind boggling to me and it's not like you fiddled around with the MAC address or anything on the PC to clone that of the xbox or anything correct? That's the only other thing I can think of that could cause this issue if the IP addresses aren't the same at that point. Or you're using some janky "splitter" of some sort instead of a switch but you said you're plugged directly into the router which would eliminate that but I'm just grasping here :)

No ever since i connected the router without touching any settings it has been an issue. I'm using a 5 port switch which has a TV, Xbox and my PC connected to it via my build in Ethernet wall ports but I even took all that out of the equation and just connected my Xbox directly from the router and still no joy. I've also worked out that whatever device turns on first ends up working so if my Xbox goes on first my PC wont work and vise versa.

That makes sense, as the router software will be blocking the conflicted IP as otherwise BOTH devices would fail at that point.

Can you perhaps reset the router to factory settings?  It should quite literally be impossible for it to be doing this so something is very wrong.
