Hi, i've bought a 3900X and i was going to test it along with the mobo, ram and psu just to make sure that it all works. I used the wraith cooler but ended up smudging thermal compound on the cpu pins and motherboard socket. I sent that back to my retailer and got a refund. I'm not really comfortable with mounting the wraith prism again to test since the mounting clasps are in a wierd and hard to reach position on my particular motherboard (i dont wanna smudge compound on the socket again). Now i've reordered the parts and my question is:

Can i testrun the CPU with just an EK waterblock or will it damage the CPU? That way i can safely remove the block after testing boot.

Processor goes into the socket before installing the heat sink.

If the heat sink moves around a little while you are clamping it down, that's normal, just try to hold it straight as possible.

The clamp needs to be in the unlocked position when you clip the arms on the tabs, then slowly move the lever into the locked position.

It is normal to feel "a pressure" as the mounting is pretty tight, again this is normal clamping force....

You can test the cpu with a waterblock, hopefully it's hook up to a water loop so you don't overheat the processor, the water block will saturate with heat if not dissipated into a water loop.

Well ok, not to sound rude but i know how to install a cpu cooler, it's just that my motherboard has a huge heatsink and power delivery right above the PCI-e slot so i couldnt reach the second clamp without moving the heatsink around (hence the smudging of thermal compound. I also meant just attatching the waterblock to the cpu just to provide enough heat dissipation for a boot.

Well you got paste on the pins, how the heck am I supposed to figure out what you where implying>? The wording perhaps threw me off.... lol

Spin the heat sink around dude. Put the clasp on the outside. The right side there in the picture above the fan plugs, that's where the swing arm goes.

You could hold down the wraith cooler with one hand, even disconnect the fan for a quick boot.

it was mounted in the right orientation but thats not the point all i want to know is if a waterblock will provide enough heat dissipation so that the CPU can boot into BIOS and give me a green light that its not a faulty components.

Yes, you could just apply thermal paste and slap the EK WB on it to see if it posts, you could probably boot to windows too if you wanted. One other method is to constantly spray it with compressed air with the can upside-down so it sprays the super cold shit on the cpu.
