So I’m running a 9900K on the Maximus 11 hero WiFi with a Strix OC 2080ti and due to my GPU block interfering with my sata ports I had to vertically mount my GPU and use a riser cable. The current riser cable I’m using is a thermal take one from my old thermal take open air case it came from and my motherboard doesn’t detect the GPU.

before I determined it’s the riser cable that’s faulty I tested my 2080ti on an old motherboard and it worked fine both the GPU and my motherboard are brand new replacements since I first thought it was my motherboard then the GPU. But now I think it’s my riser cable.

I just purchased another riser cable off amazon it has good reviews but I just want to know if anyone has had any problems with riser cables with the new RTX GPUs?

Why doesn't it clear? You shouldn't be using a riser cable at all.

sataports.jpg

So the block presses against the sata ports this not allowing the PCIE of the GPU to be fully seated into the PCIE slot about 4-5mm sits out not giving it a solid connection

what block are you using?

its a flush block? why would it touch the sata ports, take a photo of your graphics card please, i wanna see it hanging over

Well ever since I knew that was a problem it’s set up vertically now. If you look at the picture you showed the sata ports are raised higher than the PCIE slot therefore if the block sits flush against it it won’t seat fully into the slot like how I said it doesn’t make a full connection

if that was the case, no graphics card would work. something must be wrong here.

Yes that’s why I’m using the riser cable because the riser cable can fit firmly all the way into the PCI slot and the female and can fit perfectly into the graphics card making perfect connection on both sides. I tested it before with my old 1080 that used to use the same riser card on my current motherboard the maximus hero and it worked and when I receiveMy replacement 2080 TI I confirmed that it works with an old motherboard because I couldn’t start the system without the block on otherwise it would leak all over the place so I just made sure it worked and another PC. I’m assuming the problem is the riser cable because it’s so old and it has had some fair use being twisted and turned to accommodate the angles that it finally crapped out and I needed to order a new one so until the new one comes in it’s still going to be the riser cable that I think is the problem

asus isn't going to make a motherboard that doesn't have clearance for a normal graphics card, you need to take a closer look here.

Yes it’s pretty unbelievable but when I first installed in the normal way it worked then after 3 weeks all of a sudden it stopped connecting I take a closer look and the GPU isn’t fully seated I try to push it in more but the GPU block pushes against the sata ports

then it must only be like 0.5-1mm? I would sand down the sata port housing instead of using a riser cable.

When I look at the PCIE slot I see the very start of the gold pins on the GPU, the little hook on the right side of the GPU that hooks into the release latch doesn’t even get pushed out it’s already out

  • 8 months later...

I was using lian li vertical gpu kit with O11 Dynamic with Asus TUF RTX 3080 and had to remove it. The pc wouldn't pass many times from POST because the motherboard wouldn't pass signal to the monitor, the times when i would get to windows 10 had lower perfomance in games and in warzone for example had artifacts. Removed the vertical kit and every issues went away.

The problem is that this is one heavy graphics card and this sag is real! I'm tempted to try the Vertical Graphic Card Holder with Riser Cable Version 2 as the riser cable in paper seems to be of great quality (but is gen3 all the same). I guess that this all shows what many pointed few years ago when the vertical kits where introduced, the general quality of the riser cables leaves a lot to be desired.

(sorry for english as it's not my primary language)

Hi guys,

We also found this issue using A LOT of different hardware.

RTX 3080 (in our case TUF) doesn`t work with:

- Riser cables: Cablemod, Cooler master and Phanteks

- Motherboards: z490, b450, b550 and x570

Those GPU`s need a bios update ASAP if you ask me...

The riser cable from Cooler Master, are you refering to the new one? The v2?
