Hey guys, new member here planning my first rig. Was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on my components. I want to cut some costs without losing too much performance. Also need help deciding on which graphics card to get - manufacturer and model. Was thing about the 780 or r9 290.

Parts list below:

If you want to cut some costs maybe go with a different motherboard that fits all your needs anyway and is alot cheaper? I could have gone with any other motherboard than the z87-a but it overclocks good and has sli/crossfire support for a very decent price so I just went with it and I do not regret it because it fits all my needs. Or you can go with a 120gb EVO ssd then upgrade to more later. If I were you, for the graphics card go with a non reference r9 290. extra vram, more preformance.

CPU: i7 8700 GPU: Asus ROG Strix GTX 1080 Mobo: Gigabyte Z370 Gaming 5 Ram: 16GB EVGA SuperSC SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

If we're talking Aussie prices, the 290 is probably a better choice for you. What's your budget?

Thanks. I was looking at cutting down the mobo but i wasnt sure if i would lose overclock potential.

Well it really depends what board you choose to go with, but you could easily shave 60 bucks off by getting a Maximus VI Gene/Hero z87 board which look awesome and from what I have heard they are really good. All Asus z87 boards are good (ofc :P) but the only problem is that they have a gold color scheme.

what's your budget?

derp. 2500 AUD.

Overclocking matters mostly on cooling with Haswell. All motherboards will overclock similarly.

This is WAYYYYY underbudget, but no single GPU build will perform significantly better than this. Also, it has a blue and black color scheme instead of the red and black one you were going for originally. You might need some cable extensions, b/c the cables that come with the Seasonic power supply are a bit short.

Here's a red and black themed build that has a better CPU cooler and slightly higher end motherboard. It is also about 150 AUD more than the blue and black build.

That is an expensive power supply. I might suggest a Corsair AX-760 if you want to stay 80+ platinum.

Then a less expensive MOBO as others have said already.

EDIT: also that Kraken X60 is not the cheapest way to go. You could get a Corsair H110 and save a couple of bucks and keep a 280mm aio cooler.

I was thinking about going with a noctura air cooler instead to cut costs also.

Make sure if you do this to get low profile ram so that it will not interfere with the air cooler.

oh man. Sorry I didnt realize. Its less expensive where I live but anyway you could always go with an asus z87 board if you dont mind the gold color scheme. You cant go wrong with them and to be honest, I dont see why people complain about the gold color scheme when they put noctuas in their case. Its like "dUh"

Yeah I was also thinking of that, but i couldnt find much about which cheap-er psu's are still stable for OC'ing. Also the AX-760 is more than the seasonic here.

Yeah already taken this into consideration, but thank you anyway :)

Yeah haha pricing here sucks, and yeah i know haha but i guess if you get a case where you cant see them its okay, or non-windowed.

I mean I have a fractal R4 with a window but the gold is honestly unseeable. ESPECIALLY if you have LEDs

still deciding on the case, was thinking maybe a c70 as it seems to have great airflow. I do like the r4 but i dont know if it has good ventilation or not.

Any other suggestions would be great though.

I recommend the R4 but with the difference in cost between the coloration is astonishing. This is USD by the way. post-56536-0-18711200-1392218038_thumb.p
