Hey Guys,

(first post btw)

I recently bought a 780 (EVGA FTW edition, custom pcb and cooler) and am running it at 80 degrees Celsius (176 Fahrenheit).

I was wondering if that wasn't utilizing the full potential of the card. It came clocked at 79 Celsius, using precision X.

Thanks in advance,

Hamish

80c is fine, but I wouldn't go any higher.

GPU Boost 2.0 had the temp limit at 79c default.

95c is still perfectly fine. But not everyone is comfortable with it.

This^

Surely I'm not the only one who ran an 8800 at 95+ for years?

The card may not last as long as it would if it ran at 50 celsius for it's lifetime, but the cards are MADE to withstand at least 100 degrees celsius.

If anything, it's your motherboard that you shoudl worry about when hitting the hundreds. My old motherboard had the whole pcb area around the pci slot just completely browned from the heat

Ok, cheers I will probably just keep it at where it is for the moment, I hope to SLI it at some point and I want it to survive until then.

:)

Make sure you have at LEAST one slot between the cards (unless you're planning to water cool.)

Is the temp actually at or around 80C under load? Or are you just asking if setting a temp target at 80C is ok? Remember that this number in EVGA Precision is just limit you want to keep it at. For Example I have my EVGA GTX780 Classified set at a target temp of 90C, but it hasn't hit anything higher than 70 while overclocked. Just cuz the target temp is high doesn't mean the card will even get close to it.

CPU: Core i7 4770k @ 4.3GHz , GPU: EVGA GTX 780 CLassified @ 1350/7000 MHz, Mobo: Asus Maximus VI Hero, Ram: G. Skill X Series @ 1866, Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB, PSU: Corsair HX850, Case: NZXT Phantom(White).

It is actually reaching 80, under load.

I see, I think having your power target at ~90C is a safe temp for everyday use, so I would set something like that in precision. If your target is set to 80 and its hitting 80 then you will be bottle necked by temp.

This is what I recommend doing:

1)set a custom fan curve in evga precision that is really aggressive. I would start at 40% around 40C, then make a linear line toward whatever you set your max temp to be, in the example below you can see it is maxed at ~80C.

2)Find out what exactly is limiting your performance. Do this by first opening evga precision and clicking on performance logyMk47xl.png

Then double click on inside one of the graphs:

ph4bYcV.png

That should open up a new window:

gMBvkCS.jpg

Here you can find Temp Limit, Power Limit(this is your power target percentage), Voltage limit etc. Pretty much what I would do is put your card under load and see which one of these is set to 1. If it is your temps then see if you feel comfortable bumping up your temp limit. I recommend under 100 and around 90 is best. If your still hitting that high temp and its your limit then try to increase cooling, you cam get a new case, ventilate your current one better etc.

Hope this helps!
